Went to Yellowstone...just a one-nighter. It was a nightmare...had a nice visit with a ranger in my camp when some guys tried to steal the site from me

Enjoy. It's a great light. Been using that model for some time now and the brightness and adjustments are perfect. My brother takes a brighter one and it creates too much contrast with the areas not being lit up so it takes long for your eyes to adjust. This one works just right.

    Hey guys,

I've been following this thread with interest, like most Tacoma owners, I love gear.

Just finished a 3 day hike in the Black Mountains of NC. The goal was to hike over 7 of the 42 peaks in NC over 6000 feet, including Mount Mitchell the highest peak east of the Mississippi:

    Gear for three days:

    Awesome trip!

I really enjoy getting up above 5000 feet around here, it's a completely different ecosystem from I'm used to down here in the valley.

    Long story....

Camp was really busy - full by the time I got back mid afternoon. I had set up in the morning and got one of the last empty spots. About 8 pm these two guys drive up and tell me that I'm in their spot. I told them that it was empty when I got there that morning - camp rules say that you have to leave your pay stub and a personal item like a chair or bucket to mark a spot as being occupied and they had done neither. They just kept repeating 'that's our spot, we paid for it'. thankfully they stayed in their vehicle otherwise i would have been really freaked out. they drove off and about 30 minutes later the ranger shows up (huge sigh of relief there). he asks me why i took an occupied spot and i told him that there was nothing left at the site for me to think that it was taken. the guys had followed the ranger back and started in 'that's our spot...' then he said 'that's our rock. we put that rock there to mark the spot.' fantastic. the ranger and I were trying not to laugh at these two....apparently they didn't understand that by 'leaving a personal item' the park service meant that you were supposed to leave something man made, something that you brought to the park. picking up a rock and placing it on the ground next to the fire pit didn't quite qualify. the ranger was going to ask me to move (some sites were still available in another section of camp that wasn't technically open for the year yet) but then changed his mind and asked these two to move...that way i didn't have to start another fire, reset up my tent in the dark, yada yada...
As he was getting back into his car to lead the guys to another site he apologized to me for the trouble and told me that even he would have overlooked 'their rock'

 Those 2 needed the stupid slapped out of them. Glad you got to keep your camp though!

Steve, We found our route in a book called "Backpacking North Carolina" by Joe Miller, great book for those of us stomping around NC. We live in a great state for Backpacking, you could spend 10 years just poking around Pisgah National Forest.

I read about the book on trails.com. I just dont know how much longer I will be in NC. Might be going to GA so I can still stay around the Mountains.

That was my main concern....I hadn't paid a lot of attention to the vehicles driving through camp that afternoon ( I had been there for most of the afternoon reading & just relaxing) so I was thinking that they had come through, seen that I was alone, and figured that I would be an easy target to harass and steal my campsite. Like I said, I was very relieved when the ranger showed up. I think he realized that I was very familiar with the park rules and regs and the camping regs as well and these guys well....yeah...

Hey I was just over there in November! We came in from the east and Black Balsam Knob was our turn around point. Beautiful country out there.
