I like being on the edge of a wooded area... you get to see the view of out in the open and have the protection from some of the elements

Exactly. I picked a not so great spot on Saturday and ended up having to move....after the wind came through and nearly picked up my tent and me!

Mine roam during the day then sleep in the back of my 4runner at night when car camping. I just had 3 dogs on this last trip. Two of mine and I had my parents dog. When I'm backpacking, I sleep on the ground and I only bring my lab and he normally just sleeps next to me.

I bought a 3 person tent so my pup can sleep inside with me and the gf. I'm not sure if it's quite big enough to fit his crate though, might have to bring one the next size down that he just barely fits into.

Dog sleeps in the backseat of the truck. I try to keep him under control at all times. Whether it's voice or a leash/tie-out cable. I'd rather he didn't take off after something he shouldn't ;)

That's the reason my lab roams. He has ran off two mountain lions, treed one and let me know a bear was coming when I was backpacking on the divide. (I was sleeping)

I don't know. For me, he's good at barking/warning. But having him run off is a gamble as almost any animal could do some serious damage with one swat, one kick or one bite.

I don't disagree. But prior to me living in my current house. His back yard was populated with bears. He has no fear of them. I figured If it didn't happen at home he's good to go. But he is no weekend warrior we are always in the mountains.

Yeah. We don't live near the woods but we have experience hiking in many places with wild animals (Bobcats, Mt. Lions)-he's tried to chase a Bobcat in the past-but is freaked out by a dead deer.

Anyone have any recommendations for square sleeping bags? I'm looking for around 20degree $100 range, it wont be used for backpacking just car camping.

    thanks
its was a great time until 10.23 pm Friday night
the area has dispersed camping so there are other campers around maybe 1/2 apart or such
and I hear some crunching cracking in woods I use my flashlight that's like a light from god and when I turn it one its on strobe mode.....
then I hear crazy sounds of wood being cracked in half.....by the time I stopped having a heart attack and got the light off of strobe the bear was gone.....
after that I went and got my gun to keep at side....

then the next night a micro burst comes through and for all of about 1 minute I got to hear the sounds of many, many trees / branches cracking and smashing to ground
was something I will never forget....
