ive hiked into quite a few places and usually around 4-7 miles one way depending on where i go. My pack is usually around 60lbs give or take. In the Marines i just got used to packing that much weight so it pays off now because i hike in and have everything i could possibly want :)

once you get used to it, it doesnt seem like that much.whats an average pack for people in this thread?

thank you for your service first off. my pack generally is around 30 but I have been lightening my load quite a bit. This last trip, I could have gotten by at 20

for day hikes (3 to 8 miles) I lug around 20 lbs on average. Most of that weight is water and camera gear.

I too humped a 60lb+ pack in the corps, plus a 110lb 50 cal barrel. Just because I did it back then doesn't mean I want to do it now.

Heaviest my pack has been on a backpacking trip now was 38lbs for a 5 day backpack. Now that I have gone to a hammock my pack has been far lighter. I can usually get my pack down to 22lbs for a 3 day trip.

thats about where I am at. Its tough getting it much lower than that. haha.

Google this program. "backpacker weights". I use that and have all my gear weighed so I can tell exactly how much I am putting in the pack. That has helped shed weight too.

If I really want to I have learned to go below 20. That is mainly for 1-2 night expedition whitewater kayaking where you are not only paddling the weight but have to be able to run rapids with it.

That said I still backpack with a ~60 lb pack too. I couldn't agree more that the comforts of home make backpacking 20x better.

This chair looks awesome, read a few reviews and saw some vids on it, looks pretty legit. Very functional design!

    Here's Backpacker Mags review: http://www.backpacker.com/may_09_gear_review_alite_designs_monarch_butterfly_chair/gear/13077

Your pics look great, thanks for sharing, I have yet to camp at RRG in the winter, hopefully that changes soon. Two weeks from now I'll be camping down near Mammoth Cave. Can't Wait!

For a 4 - 7 mile hike, I would be around 20lbs. Just like most people on here, I'm still trying to get the pack weight down.

thanks for the service brother! I also pack pretty heavy......if its a one nighter and i didnt have to hike to far i bring as much as i can, but if its a 3 or 4 day hike i usually pack around 40-50 pounds.....i dont think i have gotten below 35. Like you said after a while you get use to it:D

I just packed a 75 lb pack in 6 miles on snow shoes it was miserable. Im 212lbs before the pack so 287lbs with my pack on snow shoes when it got deep it sucked ass for me. We packed in a bunch of beer and steaks to this cabin my friend owns. A normal pack I would shoot for under 50lbs for any sort of long trip.

Hey camping folks, got a newb question for y'all. I just noticed a small rip in my tent. It's in the sleeve that the pole slides thru. How's the easiest and best ways to fix this?

They make tent repair kits for nylon tents. If its an old tent I would buy a new one but thats just me. I dont like my gear to fail while in use.

I think for my next trip, I will be getting that chair. Looked a little weird at first but with my back the way it is and hearing people say how comfy it is, I think I may just cave in and get one.

Mammoth is going to be great. I did a canoe/camp trip along the Green River and passed through there a few summers ago. The RRG is beautiful during the winter. All the ice and snow makes for some beautiful scenery. You do have to be extra careful walking around through.

    this VVVV
if the sleeve is in a spot that you can sew it together and not worry about any leaking, I would just do that instead and use a strong thread.

I just like the Atlas ones because they looked to be more well built - especially the bindings. Have you noticed that your frames scratch really easily? I just got mine earlier this month and there are scratches all over them :(
