    A Catskills quickie

Driving by the Catskills, I decided on a quickie night hike/ bivouac,

Stopped by the last water source (a heretofore reliable spring) before the higher elevations; gosh darn it, she's frozen over, all I can find is moist muck...
    P1000309.jpg

So... I'm left with only .5 liter of water. The only option is to press on with water management and snow eating.
Continued with night hike and eventually located flat spot with good view..
    P1000310.jpg

Continuous light snow from about midnight until the following morning....

Alright guys what's your go-to affordable do it all camp knife? (if its got a ferro stick with it even better) I know I don't need the best of the best so I'm perfectly fine with something that you more experienced guys have gripes about. There's a lot out there with tons of contrasting reviews on sites like Amazon so I'm all ears from people that I hope can point me in the right direction.

“Opined No.12 Explore Stainless Steel Survival Knife.”

I got one with fluorescent orange scales but they offer it in other colors too. Blade, ferro, and whistle. Shouldn’t cost more than $50.

That's what i've used. It's fairly light, fairly robust and not super expensive.

So many knives to choose from.
Puukko, Kephart, Camp Knife, Bowie, Paring, ...
    Full tang or not.
    Natural handle or not.
    Thickness, serrated, etc.

For food prep, whittling, carving, fire prep, splitting, feather making, furniture, ....

    What is affordable?
Mora is always a great choice.
My fav Moras are the Garberg, Bushcraft, and Classic No1 (No longer available). Classic No2 is great.

Personally, I like the ferro rod separate from the handle.

Been trying out Trailtopia freeze dried meals and digging them. Even my very picky son is eating what I’ve given him so far. Any family favorites worth trying?

Peach/blueberry crisp is a big hit here. We like the garden vegetable pasta with the beef crumble side added to it. Doing the teriyaki chicken and the beef stroganoff in two weekends.

They have a few different meat sides that can be added to meals before water and were keen to try them. Sausage, cubed beef, and chicken. If they are as good as the beef crumble that we’ve already had they will be worth it as well.

Last night I ate a Mountain House freeze-dried Beef Stroganoff that had expired in 2014; tasted fine, but then I might not have the most discerning palate. :D

Mountain House has some good stuff, Backpackers Pantry has gone way down in quality in my opinion.
