i have the Kelty Noah 12x12 Tarp. Best money i have ever spent on a shelter. I love using it in Fall as a modified A-Frame/Lean-to with one side on the ground blocking the prevailing wind and then the other end over a ridgeline well above the ground. Even with three open sides, winds and 20 degree weather I have yet to make it through a night that i didn't need to shed my layers down to my base. You won't be disappointed! the one thing that is a double edged sword is the animals. it's nice to wake up and see what's walking through camp. however this past fall i woke up to a mouse sitting by my face warming itself. that or it was trying to get to the bourbon...

i am planning on doing the same myself. just got the new cabela's catalog in and they have their premium and ultra marine carpet on sale in honor of their 50th anniv. i think i am going to order 2 rolls of 6'X3' at 19.99 a roll.

has anyone found marine grade MDF at Lowes or Home Depot? i always get a strange look when i ask.

I don't believe there is such a thing. There is Marine grade plywood.

well now that might explain the looks.

how long do you think it would last if i used marine grade and/or pressure treated wood with the carpet and left it in the bed year around without a topper? i am thinking about going ahead with the platform without the topper and just using my tarp on car camping trips...

MDF is just sawdust glued together...very absorbent and heavy so not the best in that situation.

Marine plywood isn't exactly waterproof either. It just has a special glue and higher grade of wood used than regular ply. It is also very pricey.

Pressure treated ply is chemically treated to resist rot but again not waterproof.

If you're going to leave it exposed you might want to consider putting down some sort of waterproof membrane over the wood before you install the carpet. Something like a shower pan membrane might work if you can get it the right size.

And what is your plan if it should rain on the way to your camping destination and the carpet gets wet before you have time to set up camp? Going to be a long, cold night for you....

membrane, good idea. that's what the extra ground tarp is for. instead of wet hard gound it will be a wet platform. actually exposing my hard work to weather cycles like that would just ruin the work and eventually ruin a good trip. i suppose i should just wait until i can do it right.

i am however still going to do the membrane when i eventually get to it. i have four dogs and one that just loves to mark the world. yes he has a strong Napoleonic complex, and being able to hose off the platform will be a huge plus.

I have one of these laying around. So I guess this will have to do until I have some extra money for a nice sleeping pad.

    http://www.coleman.com/coleman/colemancom/detail.asp?product_id=2000003092&categoryid=10072&brand=

This cot comes with a pad, so it should work out nice.

There is a product called medex, and there is another one that I cant remember the name of. I used to work at a lumber yard and we carried it. It's pretty sweet stuff we had a display piece and it was 1/2 submerged in water no swellling and no delaminating. They were 3/4" thick and 47"x97" and approx $45. It is a difficult find nowadays.

old set up, meet new set up.

on the left is my tried and true, taken every amount of abuse I can throw at it Kelty reclouds 5600 ci. and coleman exponent zero degree mummy bag.

I wanted something smaller/lighter for summer trips, and I was tired of sweating my balls off in the zero degree bag so I went and raided REI this afternoon and walked out with the stuff on the right. Osprey Kestrel 38, 2300 ci. black diamond headlamo and an REI brand 40 degree mummy bag.

first summer trip is memorial day weekend, can't wait to try the new stuff out.
