haha oh man I have been in some shitty situations but nothing like that. Were you new to backpacking when that happened? About the making the fire over 3500 ft... rangers could kiss my ass if I was in that situation. lol My foot is a little more important than some rule.

my worst experience camping was something similar to that. it had been a few years and i didn't think to check my supplies. well on the first night it started to rain and of course every drop was hitting my fly and breaking up into a million little drops inside my tent. so i abandoned that and crawled in with a friend. after warming back up and falling asleep. i woke up in about six inches of water from my ankles down. needles to say, but i packed before dawn and didn't stay the second night. still go camping with the same group of guys every year, but i am better prepared now. did i mention that it was only a few degrees above freezing...?

Actually, I was very experienced when that happened. I was pushing my limits and seeing how light I could go with the equipment I had.

The biggest mistake I made was not checking with the ranger about conditions around the lake. I just assumed that since it was July that all the snow would be gone. I also kinda assumed I could fall in with my friends if something went wrong.

I've been in a lot worse of conditions -- mostly back in Boy Scouts -- and I was never in any real danger. Just underprepared.

I know how you feel, man.

That right there is why I never carry down sleeping bags. Always synthetic. Warm when wet!

lol yeah, being able to lay in the bed is awesome. It's probably the only time that being short comes in handy though.

A friend of mine is trying to talk me into to camping out in fontana this friday-saturday. It's likely to rain, so we'll see how well the tent holds up.

Ah. Yeah Weather conditions is the biggest thing that controls what I bring/dont bring.
down is nice because it packs up really easy but I will never own a down bag just because when the get wet, they dont work

I got the same tent a week or two ago and used it last weekend. My friend said it wasnt winter rated? I slept without a sleeping pad and it was miserable! My back hurt for the next 3 or 4 days. I'm definitely going to invest in a sleeping pad.

Also I found an external frame backpack that is a Camp Trails brand backpack according to the patch on it. Does anyone know anything about these. Its pretty old probably around 20 years if i had to guess.
