www.mtbr.com used to have some trail reviews mostly written by readers. You can also find them on www.singletracks.com (maybe more of them too).

Yep! If you don't have the thick stuff you can always just double/triple layer thinner stuff.

I should have mentioned it earlier but my system is equal parts treatment center and ponzi scheme.

Anyone have any suggestions for sharpening hatchets or axes (short of a grinder)? I have a small "roller style" and it's miserable.

So I finally got a weekend off to be able and get out. The GF and I are going with some friends later this month and their dogs, so we wanted to take our 6-month old Lab/Border Collie mix out to see how she did in the tent.

We went to Dash Point State Park, which is about a 30 minute drive from our front door and about 45 minutes from downtown Seattle. It's right on Puget Sound with a big sandy beach, hiking trails, etc. It's probably best known for its bike trails -- which is the only other time I had ever been there.

Since we were car camping, I figured I could carry a load.

I folded the rear seats down and threw a bamboo mat and some towels and blankets over them for Luna to stay on during the ride.

We had reserved our spot ahead of time, so when we got there, we just had to set up.

We took the dog to the beach.

Then she started eating the firewood.

Then she racked out. She was very good in the tent.

She was definitely eager to go the next day.

All things considered, it wasn't a challenging trip by any means. I didn't really get to test (or use, even) any new gear aside from my camp axe -- which, whatever it's a hatchet for firewood. It works. End of review.

Apart from the dog stuff, I basically drank beer and read Black Hawk Down on my iPad around the fire. But, we now know that she won't freak out in the tent, so that's good. Our next trip is coming up on the 19-21st, so hopefully there will be more to discuss.

That's all I have for now.
