Anyone have any experience with getting their child on skis? My daughter who will be 5 in Jan is good at everything and fearless to no end. I was thinking about getting her into skiing this year. We were thinking about hitting up a ski slope somewhere in the North East, spending the weekend and skiing one of the days. That way my wife will get a break from having to watch our son, he will be 2 in Jan.

I was born in Vermont and we had a cross country ski center next door to our house. My parents were avid Nordic skiiers at the time so as soon as I could walk they put me on xc skis and would take me out (I guess verrrry slowly :D ). My first time down hill skiing was when I was probably around 5. I'd say the best way to teach kids is just to put them in ski school, that way you still get to have some fun instead of dealing with the kid the whole time. Also the ski school instructors are better teachers than you.

When I went there I had 15 bucks left in spending cash...and my buddies wanted to do a snow cat ride up to the hop of the mountain...so I had a choice between buy a cat ticket or eat for the rest of the day...I chose cat ride:D

I made it the rest of the trip on a bag of munching and Arizona. Worth it.

At 5, I would put her in a couple days of lessons with kids her own age. Fun for her and you get some time to ski. Most places have some good package deals to hook the kids.

I started my son at 2 and my daughter at 3. A mix of 2 hour lessons and sking with my wife and I. Your back will pay the price in the early years untangling them. We ditched the lessons 3 years ago and just had the kids ski with us. I don't baby them we ski anything and everyting on the mountain (it's my time too). Now with the kids at 8 and 10, it's my wife (who is a good skier) is at the end of the line. One of the best sports you can do as a family!

Looks like the thread is alive again with the storm rolling out here!

I am thinking about getting her some rental skis and to take a class at least once. The first weekend we go unless she absolutely loves it and needs to go again. I am excited, I am sure she will like it. I know it is good to start kids off early with anything and everything. I didnt start skiing until I was in 9th or 10th grade.
