Unable to Remove Top Rear Shock Nut

It’s sort of not supposed to happen. It’s not a big deal if it does haha. yeah see for me vice grips did nothing. I might just grind it off ya

I had this installed at a shop originally (5 years ago). It was installed correctly ‍♂️
I don’t like how the rear shocks are done either on tacomas tbh

I think rather than even cutting the whole stem I’m just gonna try and salvage that and just cut The bolt barely

 

Explain the threading a nut onto the bottom?I’m not following

It was a heat gun not a torch, but same shit in the end

 

In the shock body was where the lock tight was
It was placed by icon! it was red.

 

Gas axe, cutting wheel on a grinder, metal blade on sawzall.

Done in less than 5 minutes.

If using a grinder, be sure to wear safety glasses and gloves. This is an awkward place, easy to shatter a wheel. Flying cutting wheel shards are wicked beyond belief. 4 1/2" grinders spin the wheel at 10,000 rpm.

Get the nutt cherry red and it will come off with no issues and an added bonus , you can use the same nutt again . Its only the rust you are fighting

 

Usually people try penetrating lube/PB blaster for a couple days before starting the work - let it soak in. Id also try some map gas on the threads to heat things up. Or you could find someone stronger than you to help?

Worse case scenario, you cut it off, and buy a new threaded piece from Icon.

 

There's a little bit of threaded rod sticking out the bottom yes? If u r particularly concerned with not destroying that part try finding out the thread pattern of that rod, and putting a nut on the bottom to get more leverage of a 6side than a 2. But also heat that bitch, metal contracts and expands and if u have any locktite in that nut up top it should melt it out.

FAir. I’ll try doing it for a couple of days, and then I’ll try to heat it up even more with a torch. If that dont work, Then, cutting it is haha

although cutting seems nice, quick, and easy. Very appealing

I always try manual first. Sometimes with cutting you could miss, and mess up something else.. Get a friend, or a long tube to go over your wrench, or both.

 

I just had a thought, that maybe it's reverse threaded, and dozens and dozens of taco owners have been resorting to cut off wheels and torches when all they had to do was turn the wrench the other way.

Gave myself a good chuckle out of that.

 

Magnetic Inductive heater on the top nut, heat it red hot and it'll turn right off.

 

Another method to try. Shock or Impact.

Use something to lock the bottom (where the icon shock was).
Box end wrench on the top nut.
Place a piece of black pipe over the box end wrench
Apply torque to loosen the nut while holding the black pipe (cheater piece).
Strike the box end wrench near the end away from the nut with a 3 lb blacksmith hammer. You want to hit the black pipe at the joint with the box end wrench.

Note: Apply as much torque as you can. The hammer strike will have a tendency to rebound the cheater piece.
