I've had 5 Toyota PUs and I think my 07 Tacoma is the last one.

I damaged the passenger side rear view mirror. A Toyota mirror was $114.00. A comparable mirror online was $38.00 including shipping.
I had my windshield replaced and the rear view mirror was damaged and I didn't notice it for a month or two. Toyota rear view mirror over $100.00, a serviceable Pep Boys Mirror was $24.00.
The wind caught my door the other day and the door check broke before I caught the door.
Fortunately the door itself was not damaged.
A new door check is $121.00.

Look at the thing connected to the door post that slides into the door and ask yourself it that's worth $121.00

My transmission started shifting rough about 6 months ago so I went to the Toyota dealer and they charged me for 4 quarts of transmission fluid.
When I asked where it went they didn't know as there was no indication of a leak anywhere and no fluid in my engine oil.

How do you lose 4 quarts of transmission fluid without there being oil all over the underside of your truck in your engine oil?

Sorry for the complaining first post but the $121.00 door check was the straw that broke the camels back.

Higher part costs are typical of any import car.

No different then Honda. When crap broke, it broke. And it was really expensive to fix.

Try parts.camelbacktoyota.com or Rock Auto. I don't buy anything from my local dealership because they are generally inflated. Camelback Toyota is a dealership but their online parts department sells parts much cheaper than most dealerships and they ship to your door. Rock Auto is awesome for reasonably priced aftermarket parts and offer a discount to TW members.

I mean that's pretty much all vehicles these days. It's not just specific to the tacoma, replacement parts from the dealer aren't cheap. You'll encounter the same thing with any modern vehicle. Maybe sell your truck and buy a bicycle? Replacement parts are cheaper for those.

They don't call it "stealership" for nothing...

    I buy online.

This is due to the greed of both manufacturer and dealer, and mostly the dealer markup.

buy again, or don't. the cost for replacement parts from the factory on ANY make is going to be insanely marked up. buy online and take it to a local shop for install if you need to - dealership is last resort.

So they checked trans fluid and it was 4 quarts low and they refilled? How rough was it shifting?

Seems like normal to me. Have you looked up Mercedes, Audi, or BMW parts from a dealership?

It's not ALWAYS apples to apples though. Broke my drivers side mirror on my 1st Gen (hit a BUZZARD if you can believe that, glad mirror was the only casualty). Anyway....

Genuine Toyota part was $149 or so if memory serves. Got an aftermarket for $70 or so.

It VIBRATED at road speed. Everything I saw in it looked blurry. Got a replacement as I thought that HAD to be a defective one. Nope, next one (from a different supplier) same as the first.

NOW, think about using a drivetrain or safety part (brake caliper for instance) from that kind of supplier! Think I'll shop and do the best I can at the dealership or NAPA. You can't save enough on cheaper parts in a lifetime to make up for one big UH-OH (accident, engine failure, etc.). Just my thoughts, YMMV.

Hence the higher resale value,.. it's worth it's weight in parts alone. ha ha

What are you going to do ride the bus?

Toyota is the lowest cost of ownership, little things break and cost money to repair at least they dont make us pay 500 for an oil change like mercedes.

It ain't just Toyota parts. GM will end you over in a heartbeat with their "made of gold in china" parts. If you really wanna cry about high priced parts buy a John Deere tractor. Holy crap talk about high!

There is a good chance your crankcase had 5 quarts too much oil in it too, the day the previous owner drained the transmission instead of the crankcase. Happens all the time.
