20k in damage and they didn't total it out? That doesn't make any sense

    My thoughts exactly.

On top of that, a Tacoma is not friendly on gas either. I get 5 MPG better in my GTO than in my Tacoma.

I cannot speak as to whether or not you should sell and buy another. But I just sold my 2010 FJ and bought a 2016 Tacoma O/R, so can share the experience.

First, the dealer recommended selling the FJ outright. Not sure why, but they were not interested in my trade-in. The FJ was not too hard to sell, so I think FJs still have good resell value. (Whether that will be true in a few years, who knows.)

The main reasons I like the Tacoma over the FJ are: manual transmission, which I love; much more cargo space (Leer topper on a DCSB); the kids have their own backseat doors with fully functioning windows.

The FJ and Taco are equally capable off-roaders. There are other things I like about the Taco that were not important to my decision, like the sunroof, Nav system, and an enthusiastic TW. And there are some drawbacks to the Taco too, like being the first year 3rd gen, a bit harder to get into/out of, not quite as flashy.

Good luck, and get what you really want.

Damage needed to be worth more than the vehicle to be a total.

How much do you owe on the FJ?

2 year old vehicles getting sold are never a money making deal if you are replacing it with another vehicle with payments.

As for being wrecked, you won't lose much with a Toyota. You will lose because its a fairly new vehicle.

The only way to win at the game is to drive the rig as long as possible. We all (most) bought Toyotas for reliability. If you are not going to keep it for a long time, what's the point of having a Toyota.

In short, keep the FJ or take it in the ass. Sorry to be blunt.

Normally it's 70-75% ACV for an insurance company to total a vehicle. Normally if the airbags deploy the car is totaled, because of the cost to replace then along with the damage that's incurred to set them off and also the extra damage they do when deploying
