I was thinking about a few more pieces of armor under the tacoma after a couple days spent in the mountains. But I really don't want the additional weight for my daily driving. Decisions, decisions...

    Then no.

    I avoided a couple places that looked...questionable.

Only $1?? What do you know, advise is cheap. Lol

Rci Metalworks is great for lighter trails and can be more affordable if you don't need heavy duty. There's also CBI, Rago, C4Fab, Caliraised. Lots of options out there.

RCI aluminum skid set. Shipping and lead times seem to be a few weeks. I got the full raw set, and they’ve been great. Maybe I’m wrong, but 99% of taco owners will never need full steel skids. Ymmv

    Work in progress...
Depends on priorities. I am down to 14 mpg, highway speed, on a good day. But I only drive the Taco when I want to. No way, I would want this set up if I had to drive 40 miles or so 4 or 5 days a week. That's my 2 cents, for what it's worth.

Since it looks like you already have a TRD skid, you can get an extension from some manufacturers that work with it.

Also... have you thought of painting that thing so it matchs the rest of your truck... it sticks out a bit... I painted mine... I love how it turned out...

Other than that, you have yourself a great looking truck:thumbsup:

Aircrew was spot on. Look into RCI. I'm a little biased because they are my local shop. But they make amazing armor, sliders and racks. I went with the 1/4 inch aluminum 5052 grade. Here is why. I am overlanding not rock crawling. I need what I consider (oh shit) armor.

The transfer plate from rci fits perfect, all their plates do. I would suggest getting A arms and rear diff, rci sells them too. Your more likely to hit eather of those. I went nuts and did everything. Including my catalytic converter. When we go camping at 11500 feet I love knowing my truck is protected from that one nasty rock.

Wifes truck required plates as well.

Edit: RCI has 15% off sales pretty frequently. Next one is memorial day. Since I have 2 tacos and one 4runner. The 15% off was super smooth!

I'm a fan of OKexpedition. They make high quality aluminum skids and have great customer service! I have their transmission plate and will be ordering their transfer case and gas tank skids soon. They hold up surprisingly well for how light they are!

In my opinion unless you're seriously rock crawling lower control arm and diff skids are unnecessary. They're pretty hefty parts and if you're going fast enough to seriously damage them then you've got other problems.

I too went full RCI but went with steel as I take my truck on rough trails. The only thing that isn't RCI armor are the sliders, which I instead had fabbed up locally by a TW member. Should have them any day now. Completely covered underneath when I get those on, peace of mind is nice when I'm in BFE alone.
