I use Krown. I guess that it is a Lanolin based product. Cost me about $160 for the first application. Reapplied yearly after that. $500 seems pricey to me. Have used it on all of my vehicles for the past few years & am very satisfied with the results. I live in a heavily road salted area & it really works.

I think painting a boat with that anti fouling paint can be worse depending how big the boat is. I use to do my 19' one when i use to fish the ocean....lousy job.

Do you really need to protect it? Your truck is under warranty. My guess is, if you don’t want the hassle of spraying the frame with some goo once a year, you won’t want the hassle of anything else that might arise out of warranty. If you really care about the vehicle and want to keep it a long time, you will do what’s needed to take care of it. If you are going to take it to a mechanic every time it needs washer fluid, then I say just drive it for a couple years and trade it in when it’s out of warranty.

Hey op, I understand not wanting to DYIl it’s a messy nasty job. not hard, but nasty. That said, I wouldn’t run it naked either, these trucks rust!

I only DYI because I am in California and there are no services near me.

If I were in your shoes I would drive to NH oil, get it done while having lunch, and drive back.

If you are not willing to do that plan on trading the truck after 4. Winters and buy new. Nothing wrong with that either.

I think I might just take it to the nearest Krown which is 2 hrs away. $160 seems reasonable. They don’t make on oily mess anywhere on the outside of the car do they?

They give it a wash after the application, it will drip and seep off the frame onto your driveway after the application for several days.... so don't park it in your living room.

Like everything, the tools make the job.

With a lift or good ramps, spraying the truck is fairly easy. Same with painting a boat on stands.

Lying on your back with the boat on a trailer and your nose an inch away from the hull, that sucks.

In the OP’s situation, given the closest local guy is charging about 2.5X the going rate, I’d invest in good ramps and equipment to do it myself.

Is there a regional VA sub forum? I’d bet there would be a crew of locals interested in having their trucks sprayed. The OP could probably find a guy willing to spray his truck for him too.

I just read that they have to drill holes…not sure I like that…

I used Automotive Protection Services in Fairfax for the last 2 yrs. Under carriage looks great. Was worried about this in general and all the reviews about trapping moisture and creating hidden rust. They use nuxodol which seems good. They also have rly knowledgeable staff and do good work.

Oh and I go back annually for a touch up for about $60 which keeps the warranty for ten or so years.

Yes, they drill a 1/4" hole in the doors to stick the wand in to spray the panels. They will put a plastic plug in the hole afterwards, it looks factory. When you go back for a re-application, they can just pop those plugs out and reuse those same holes.

Drilling holes in a new truck seems daunting, but it's part of the process. Like I stated earlier, if your vehicle is new you will get a lifetime corrosion warranty (with yearly re-applications)

Here is what they do: https://youtu.be/WgvL40QefZ0

That's a big nope considering that the holes won't be primed / painted afterward. You'd have to put a big bet on the protection of the fluid.

It is interesting as all the clean up that I needed afterward was barely a hand wash. Loving the WW scent. It is almost like new car smell and not strong at all. I'm somewhat sensitive to odors, like perfume, candles, and such.

They put some type of grease on the hole before popping that plug in, so it will not be rusting there.

Sorry, but that would not work for me. I've painted and RTV'ed the few holes that I have drilled and we really don't have a corrosive environment here.

    Just my own feelings there.

I believe it is an oil base that it tar like. It never gets real hard and can be scraped with your finger nail. It is good to keep an eye on it and do touch ups every once in awhile. By me they will wash your underside and do touch ups for $60. Give them a call and ask any questions or better yet go see them and have them show you also.

Ziebart does not use a rubberized undercoating. It is oil based and has a tar like finish that can be scraped with a finger nail. I used Ziebart years ago and again on my Taco. I would have done it myself, but I wanted all the insides of the doors, fenders, rockers etc done well and I just did not have the time or space to really do it right.

Awesome, I couldn't tell from the pics on their website, and the video said "abrasion resistant material". Thanks for clarifying.

Do people choose to forgo the inside the doors treatment, eliminating the need for any drilled holes? I’m more interested in protecting the underside of the truck, not inside the doors.

I don't know if that's a common request or not.

Your best bet is to call and ask them directly.

I just spray the frame and suspension yearly and leave the body alone. If you decline the inside the door treatment at a shop, they will likely decline to give you a warranty, which would be fine with me.
