    Hello,
I'm looking to buy my first Tacoma and I just found a 2016 TRD OR with "low mileage".
I unfortunately noticed some decent amount of rust and I wanted to get your advice on this.
Dealer said it's just cosmetic, that he will treat it and coat it for me.
What do you guys think ? Is it too much rust ?
    Thanks

The frame rust might be "cosmetic" now, but it will turn into a problem later.
I would be more concerned with the rust on the underbody (rockers, floor pan)

Either way, unless the price was really cheap and you didnt plan to keep it for more than 5 years I would pass on it.

Yeah, the bigger issue is the rust you can't see. One member here just had their frame replaced on a 2015! I think Toyota's frame campaign includes up to 2017. I'm not 100% on that though. Someone else my have the details.

I think 3rd gens are covered under the 10 year frame replacement warranty. Toyota sent me a letter a few years back letting me know although mines completely rust free living in the desert. :tumbleweed:

That said, it's a solid pass on this truck OP. Run away from that dealer fast!

Also beware when a dealer says "treat it and coat it" o_O usually that means spraying rubberized undercoating over everything so it looks great -- until down the road when a big chunk falls off revealing the rust that has been festering behind it.

Short version: Never buy a used vehicle with a nice fresh undercoating job.

From my experience owning these toyota 4wd pickups you can't rely of toyota to prevent their chassis from rust, especially if in the salt belt. If planning to keep the truck long term, you need to start with some sort of rust inhibiter from day one, and keep on it. Best you can do now is to wire wheel, or brush as much surface rust away as possible, use a rust converter, then a good chassis black paint. After all is done, it's time for a rust inhibitor to be applied of your flavor.
