Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protector is often recommended as an undercoating spray and is also marketed as a chain lube.

I did the Fluid Film back in October on a new clean truck. One local snow storm in Nov, lots of rain, and a trip to upstate NY last week with snow and a lot of local salted roads. Changed the oil yesterday and it looked fine. I rinsed the undercarriage and water and it still beads off all areas. I don't smell anything other than the initial burn of overspray off the exhaust.

One thing I'll add. Do not ignore the aluminum transfer case and trans housings. I originally did mine but missed some high spots and the alloy was being attacked on the surface already. Lots of places like stiffening ribs in the casting for salt and sand to collect. I did a more detailed job after rinsing this time. My friend has a Ford and spends a lot of time driving in Vermont to ski. Last year he noticed some ATF leaking and found a hole corroded in the side of the transmission!

If Amsoil could find away to sell a current product as spank lube they would.

I was always taught to use bar and chain oil for a chainsaw.

I'm glad there is a current thread on this, I just moved home to New England for the winter and was getting ready to Fluid Film

That said, the wannabe crusty farmer has been leaning towards the bar oil route, like speedy mentioned.
Wondering if the synthetic waxes can go longer between applications though?

But I’m allergic to wool. I don’t like how everything sticks to fluid film.

Yup, wax based works fine, I’ve been using noxudol cavity wax for years (and various similar products, I used to get it when I worked as a tech). It doesn’t trap moisture in, it doesn’t wash right off like Fluid Film, and it doesn’t attract much dirt either. It attracts some, mostly because it takes a long time for it to “dry”. Any type of waxy coating should work. I never thought about chain wax, I used some fancy Teflon spray on my Triumph that wouldn’t work for undercoating

    • I use Fluid Film on my vehicles and ParaWax Chain lube on my motorcycles. I’ve never tried using chain wax as a rust proofer but for me, a downside would be the fact that chain wax doesn’t ‘creep’ after being applied. Rust inhibitors like Fluid Film, Rust Check, Krown etc will move around and get in to the areas that did’t get sprayed directly. Chain wax would prob stick and stay really well on the underside of your truck but I wouldn’t use it in the enclosed cavities unless you could be absolutely sure you get 100% coverage. Just my thoughts anyway......

Don’t use standard WD-40, it is water based. Look for a wax or silicone based product.

Not true, who told you WD40 was water based? The level of misinformation here is shocking sometimes.

WD40 is a great sticker adhesive remover and that's about it.

I'd like to try the Mavcoat product but, I can get an 11.75 oz. aerosol can of Fluid Film at Menards for $9.99. I see on Amazon that Mavcoat Steel Shield in a 13 oz. aerosol can is $ 31.89 ($19.99 plus $11.90 for shipping). I'm not near any of Mavcoats' listed "Distributers". With only having 2 vehicles to treat, that makes the Mavcoat ~3X the cost of FF.

Where can I get the Mavcoat for a more reasonable price?
