That's what I'm saying. Just spray with the rust reformer where anything surface has formed, then spray with the oil based paint after. The brush is only for anything that is flaking (never had to use it other than the year I bought the truck from it sitting on the lot). Again, takes only 15 minutes to do each year, no messiness, and keeps the undercarriage looking great.

The more you rustproof the better. Not only moving parts, but body parts. Rocker panels & door sill take a beating. If there is metal, there will be rust.

Thats your opinion. I've stated the results i've experienced. I think a mower deck test is a fine example what lasts longest. Pretty hard to deny the results.

I guess we look at things differently. I really like having a waxy or oily substance on my frame and undercarriage. Pretty much all rust mitigation uses them. Wax and oil are insulators like the grease on battery terminals, it helps limit the electrochemical reaction known as rust or iron oxide, from occurring. The only way painting works is grinding down to the bare metal, priming and hoping no scratching occurs. I’m lazy. Paint rust areas with grease, oils and wax, just works.

Yup…..and as much as you take care of the rockers from the outside, it’s still rusts from the insides as salt from salt spray can settle near the bottom all weld joinery on all metal cars. Even aluminum and stainless steel is not immune. It just takes much longer.

Fully agree. If I didn't ever or rarely have a need to work on the undercarriage, I wouldn't mind. But I'm always going to be down there for DIY maintenance and I'd prefer not having to deal with the film left behind. I do use the CRC marine-grade cosmoline stuff on my battery terminals, hood latch, spare tire crank, and other areas that would rarely get touched or would require a paint touchup.

I thought those body panels were factory zinc coated. I had no body rust of any sort on my gen1 tundra after nearly 20 years. I never fluid flimed those pieces. Heck the way were currently headed gasoline will be history in another 20 years.

The beauty with the Tacoma is those rubber plugs can be removed to access the rockers. I loaded up that area prior to having side steps. Since I have the side steps now I slide the spray can stray in the little openings along the rockers and just unload half a can in each side.

I try to access the rockers from above by popping off the trim molding next to the door jam. It easily removes and snaps back in after spraying the panels.

Perhaps, I couldn't say. But most treated metals are compromised during the assembly process when welds reduce all metals to rust havens. Most rust starts around welded areas.

    Ha ha, I hear you.
Car makers will find a way of allowing EVs to rust badly too. Rust is a car makers best friend. Toyota made an engineering mistaken with the first gen Tundra and Taco. The bodies and frame lasted too long….. it bit into the sales. That’s why the 2 nd and third gen Tacos are such effin rust buckets that require extra body/frame maintenance. Don’t get my wrong, they still hold up well compared to other makes, but too many rust resistant cars and trucks would kill the auto industry….
Just a few percent extra chromium in the steel would give you triple the rust resistance of todays trucks. Heaven forbid….

That’s a good analogy. Rust loves to form under moist grass clipping as after the blade has managed to chip away most of the paint. IT’s brutal. Only cast aluminum manages to hold up over time if you done scape it down regularly. Even that starts to oxidize eventually.

Nothing like a coat of grease followed by a slow drive over a dusty road.

I've got an old honda lawnmower from 1986 thats still works great. It has a cast aluminum deck. Trouble was, i had bent the blade at one point hitting a buried ground rod in the yard. The bent blade wore through the aluminum deck in one area. Now it discharges the grass out of 2 places.

That’s funny. Aluminum though rust resistant has its problems too…..manufacturers got us coming and going…

Is this issue just a Gen 3 thing? Just seems you guys are obsessed with this and I have not observed a single Gen3 or Gen2 having rust. One of my best friends has a 2011 and has driven it daily since new and never has rustproofed and everything is in good shape and intact. We get our fair share of shitty weather in NW Indiana too. These companies must like guys like you buying up their product.

Funny ! That’s why we car mechanics grease monkeys in the rust belt. But Really? You like breaking off rusted bolts instead ?
