Just like the title says I have a 2012 that was eligible for the SAIS recall. No codes so they went through the pump and replaced the valves and “filter” haven’t seen any threads on if people still yanked the “new filter” that was prone to failure and went with the unifilter instead or trusted the “new and improved filter” to do the job.

Really? I thought that campaign was just a warranty extension? Aka they dont do anything until the unit fails and check engine light comes on. Interesting you got it replaced with no codes.

I installed the uni filter recently. My 2013 has about 80k miles on it and the OE filter looked fine, slightly discolored on the leading side but that's it. Still prefer the uni filter to the risk of this sponge getting sucked into my engine. I kept the old one and the old cap just in case Toyota offers to replace stuff I can put it back together

Check your my Toyota owners website mine was definitely a recall. Essentially a if you have the known codes they will replace the entire assembly valves pump etc. all of it no codes means you get valves in a new filter and a pump cleaning or something like that

The weird thing is that it is specific to 2012 Tacomas only

Ahh ok. Ill have to look into it more I guess

I remember reading about the difference between years, apparently 2013+ added a purge cycle at shutdown which was supposed to help drive moisture out or something like that. 2012s only run the pump during a cold start.

Can confirm. My 2013 has a shutoff purge cycle. It's a loud whirring sound right after I turn off the ignition. Kind of makes you wonder the first few times you hear it but it's normal and supposedly solves this problem by purging moisture. I still put the uni on though because there's no chance of it ever getting sucked into the engine.

you are both correct which is ironic given the fact that the filter can decorate any of our trucks and go in there and bust the valves or pump. I don’t have a shut off cycle but at least I live in the desert where it is dry ha ha

My 2015 failed twice. Put the uni-filter on and throw your stock parts in the glove box.

I've had a 2012 and 2013. I can confirm that this was a recall and was done on the 2012 prior to me buying it. I can also confirm that the 2012 did not have a shut down cycle, but the 2013 does. That being said, I still put the filter on the 2013 because it was still stock. Threw the old "sponge" and cap into the storage compartment behind the seat. FYI - the sponge smashes up nicely and fits into the cap for safe keeping.

I believe as part of the recall on the 2012's the ecu gets reflashed to include the shutdown purge. But dont quote me on that.

Interesting, kinda seems pointless to me if thats not the case.

I wonder if you could swap to a 2013 ECU (~85$ for a v6 Auto ecu on ebay) and get the shutdown purge. One can reprogram the vin number in techstream and re-initializing the immobilizer is pretty easy.
