Yes, I've seen how the RR treated the Chinese. Do you honestly think that would fly today? Not a chance in hell, union or not.

That's the problem with unions. They bargain for unreasonable wages, pensions out-the-ass, and other things that would make it impossible for a company/business to thrive to their full potential.

Do you really think you wouldn't be able to make a living without a union? Millions of people can and already do without one.

Unions are the only way to go in the casino industry...otherwise they would only have minimum wage ,no benefit jobs.

I didn't read anything about cops.
Cops get screwed as do the firemen even with unions.
The are the unsung heros and I think we all know that.

Teachers on the other hand, well they are who they are.

When you work for a company that charges your customers 110/hr I don't think 23/hr is an UNREASONABLE WAGE, considering the bulk of your overhead goes to the salaries of non-union office workers who generate no revenue for the company. As far as our "pensions-out-the-ass", we are allocating union dues from current working members to subsidize the retirement of our elders. Our pensions FUNDS have absolutely nothing to do with our employers or non-union employees, nor are they embedded costs into our hourly rate. Educate yourself.

Not what I meant. I was comparing going on the Union thread to bash unions is comparable to going on an LEO thread to bash police officers.

Being a construction manager, and being from SW PA, my experience with Unions has been interesting. We were a non union company and every once in a while we had a site that had a mix. It would create huge problems. Our crews would get their tools stolen, they wouldn't cooperate with us if needed. Then they tried to tell our crews how great unions were and tried to get them to quit their jobs even though we took really good care of our guys. Usually at the end of the job the GC would love our guys, and complain about some, but not all of the union trades.

Looking at larger unions such as the UAW and the current state of Detroit it's as though the UAW is the only ones doing well. The cost of doing business has gone up in all industries and cuts need to be made to make a profit. There's a reason why so many jobs move to the south. There are dozens of new auto plants across teh south for the sole reason of avoiding the UAW. Boeing is doign teh same thing in SC with an aircraft plant. Business exist to make money, no other reason. When external entities interfer with this, businesses will try to circumvent the obstacles. I think everyone wants everyone to have a fair wage for their job, but when a lot of unions spend their money on lobbying the govt and pay high salaries for reps, whats teh point? The teachers union is one of the largest loby groups in teh US, yet teachers salaries are still low, the govt spends more on education than any point in history and still teachers and students struggle to show any benefit. The steel workers in Pittsburgh, that's a whole other story.

anyone that bashes the cops and firefighters think about that when you need them.

They are like the military. Kind of like White blood cells, there when you need them most and you wouldn't want to be without them.

My apologies if I took your comment incorrectly.

agreed 100%. there is no need to pay relatively un-skilled assembly line worker $40/hr in rural Michigan where anyone can buy a house for $100k.

Unions are very important for workplace safety and regulations, and making sure all workers are provided obstruction free access to information about their work, pay, and benefits. However, wage should be determined in a laissez faire market environment where price floors and ceilings dont manipulate and skew wage rates. If two or more people come together and set wage rates, then it may as well be as detrimental to our capitalistic economy as any other cartel such as OPEC. Just my .02

Florida is a right to work state. I am a Union HVAC Tech, apart of the United Association of Plumbers & Pipefitters. We make approximately $3/hr above the National Average recorded in 2009.

There are non-union contractors in this state paying their employees about 15%-20% less than that and charging comparable and sometimes much higher rates to customers. They have less overhead because their employees are often paid on "piece work" contracts, are not compensated for overtime, have to provide their own tools, are required to park their work vehicles and commute to and from the central shops.

I believe in a persons "right to work", no one should be forced to join or be kept from joining a labor union in my opinion. If you think unions are bad because of PAC funds and HUGE PENSIONS then enjoy yourself on the other side. I believe my skill level warrants compensation from my employers that is competitive with the national average. I am a horrible person like that.
