hey guys i just realized after a few months of owning my 2005 tacoma prerunner i have some unidentified wires underneath my front seats. the wires are covered in a black plastic cover and is connected to my seats, I think. the only thing i can think of is that its part of my side seat airbags. any thoughts would be much appreciated

Seat belt alarm/warning ..... right air bag (dash) sensor ... just a guess.

Same here... and I don't even have side airbags.

My husband and I thought it could be a seat position sensor. Like it'll know your seating position. Perhaps that has something to do with the airbag...??

It is a sensor for the airbag. It turns off below a certain weight to protect small children.

Ye it also turns off when my school bag with all my carpentry code books is sitting on it!
Does that mean its been like me lugging around a small child on my back the past 2 months?

    That's the passenger seat....

I doubt the drivers side airbag will ever turn off.

I'm not sure if the airbags have a range of deployment....whether it deploys harder or softer, larger or smaller? If a sensor in the drivers seat senses the weight and/or seating position to tell the airbag to deploy fully or halfway?

I don't know what the connectors are for specifically but... My theory is that they are there for the sensor inside the seat to detect if someone is sitting in it or not.

The seat sensor is designed to kick on the airbag when something over 25lbs is in the seat.

It isn't designed to protect small children because I really don't know that many kids with car seat that are under 25lbs. Now on the Tacoma's with the exception of the doulbe cab models you can selectively turn off the airbag. Reasoning that if you do have a child in the front seat you can turn the airbag off The double cab, you have enough room in the back seat and should never put a child in the front seat hence the inability to shut off the airbag.
