Between my trucks and atvs prolly close to 20 plugs, a cumulative 200k+ miles, zero failures plugs. Having a drill and 1/4" bit was useful in several of them. I keep an older 18v Dewalt in the truck but I am considering finding an old school hand drill to get the weight out.

Sorry, but personal safety is more important than the cost of a new tire. A side tear is not repairable or recommended by manufacturers for a reason. I worked with an insurance company for a while as an adjuster. One of the main things our inspectors did was check the condition of the tires in case of an accident caused by a blow out or a roll over. A plug on the sidewall will require a lot of explaining and a possible denial of your claim. You could fight it legally, but the chances of winning are small and costly.
Now ask yourself, is it worth it?

We're not talking a side tear. We're talking a puncture on the tread edge but still on the tread.

Agree, but the OP is suggesting that it is near the edge. Tire shops will often try and upsell a customer by telling them it is unrepairable. If it is indeed on the sidewall I would personally not plug it, but if it is where the rubber is thicker or on the tread itself then a plug is a go.

When I was in college I worked a gulf station and plugged dozens of tires. we also did patches on sidewalls that never failed. If you go to discount tire now and they remove a tire and it is un-repairable by their standards, they may not even let you put it back on to leave. you have to buy a new one. I recently took my wife's 911 in with a flat and had to hold my breath. At first they did not want to repair it but they didn't have anything in stock that would fit the car. It was going to be several days to get one in so they finally repaired it. I guess they were more worried about the liability of my car sitting around than the liability of a patch failure.

Is that plug kit a permanent solution or just a temp fix? I think the tire shop does it a different way (internally) that might be a more durable fix..

Tire is already at the shop or else I'd take a pic. It is literally right at the intersection of the sidewall and tread.

When I traded mine in with 6k for my Wildpeaks, one had a screw like this too. The tire shop said they would just claim warrenty on it with Goodyear and still gave me the credit. Maybe you could see if a shop would warrenty it. Worth a shot.

Limited wheels, extra rope hooks in bed.
I'd have it broke down and put a patch on the inside.

The general consensus safety rule is that is it’s less than an inch from the side wall you toss the tire, so you need to be an inch or more towards the center of tire.
The plug & patch repair plug is the best if you decide to repair as it is both a plug & patch, I’ve used them for years with great results, no complaints or failures.

    Screen Shot 2016-09-19 at 6.22.25 PM.jpg

However, if I was in your shoes I’d buy two new tires of the exact same brand & size and use the plug & patched one as spare if the spare is not of the same size and brand as the four on the truck. I would put the new ones on the rear and the rear in front.
The reason for buying two is because as the tires wear, they wear more or less evenly on the axles and a new tire maybe bigger/taller than the used ones and may give you stability issues and/ or a pull to one side if it’s the front if the size from wear difference is too great.

Best of luck to you with whatever you decide to do
    Cheers!

tire shops will usually do an internal repair. Its a much bigger patch and makes the tire as good as new.
Those plug things are more temporary.
I have seen them hold up a while but they are not permanent.
Great kit to have though on the trail.

If a professional tire guy tells you it can't be fixed, I'd go with that recommendation, it's only your safety and the safety of others after all. I think we all know that the dealer isn't going to do shit for you and you don't want to buy a new set, so I guess you're left with one option. You buy one new tire. good luck
