I've been a long time reader of this forum and recently picked up a 2016 TRD OR AC about 6 months ago. It's my first truck and first Toyota after being a VW slave for most of my wrenching life.

Unfortunately less than a month ago I hit a hidden chunk of concrete at about 10mph while pulling off road to get to a job site. I initially thought that I just required an alignment but I ended up needing a new lower control arm and steering knuckle w/wheel bearing. The body shop I took it to seemed to do a good job and the truck drove great when I picked it up. With that said I looked underneath and noticed that the alignment adjustments were maxed out on the two legs of the lower control arm.

I took it back to the body shop and had them check it again as I thought that the maxed out adjustment bolts may indicate additional suspension components or the frame were damaged. They checked the frame (found no issues) and replaced the upper control arm as I requested. I just picked up the truck and again it drives fine but the alignment bolts still look maxed out even after a second alignment. I got the alignment sheet this time and while they used specs for a 2015 tacoma they are still well within spec for my model.

Am I right in thinking that there may still be some unresolved damage or does the appearance of these bolts mean nothing? My main concern is that if the bolts are already this far out then I may have issues getting future alignments.

I've included some pictures as well as the alignment report.

Let me know your thoughts (hopefully productive ones :crapstorm:)

    Cheers,

Welcome to TW. You're right; that doesn't look good. I would check the driver side spindle. If it's bent, you may be able to feel if it's closer to the top of the tire then the same spot on the passenger side.

They already replaced spindle and control arms, I'll still check though. Don't plan on taking it back to same body shop. Probably taking it to a Toyota dealer when I actually get some time.

Derp. I guess that's what you meant by "steering knuckle". I don't know then. Unless the parts are that far out of original spec. Did they replace with aftermarket parts? I can't imagine there would be any frame damage from something that minor.

No worries. Parts are brand new OEM toyota. It rocked me pretty good but yeah I can't imagine frame damage either. Maybe assembly error by the body shop or something. My suspension experience is pretty limited but I'm hoping to find a shop that can actually find what's wrong. That's a sweet build you got there! I'm finding that my taco is becoming a money magnet despite me having other car projects that need attention :).

Anyone else have any ideas on what areas I should have the shop look at next time? Thanks!

Did you get any pictures of the LCA rock damage? Where was it hit? Was the damage at 10 mph that bad that it warranted a new LCA? Where the ball joints changed also? Did you get a printout of the alignment?

Strike was directly on the tire, just ran over it and bottomed out suspension, probably more like 15mph now that I think of it. There was no damage that I could see so I did not get pics of it initially. I know that the shop identified that the spindle and LCA were deformed. Good catch, the ball joints are not mentioned on my service printout I'll double check the truck after work today. They may have reused old ones. Printout of alignment is in initial thread post.

    Missed that...

Judging by the printout, the right is fine. The left side could use an adjustment in....which would make the cam bolt similar to the right side. Ideally you want 0° camber and toe.

Thanks for taking a look. An alignment from a more qualified shop may be the ticket.
