Also M/T here and experiencing similar surging/non-linear power delivery at lower RPM. 400 miles so anxious to see if it changes over time

Same here on the non-linear turbo feel. I think it's programming/tune all the way. Sure comes alive after around 4k RPM, and the higher end.

And to the R to D delay...I had my tranny filled and still experienced it at times. Rarely if I take my time from when I crank to when I move and also in transitioning from R to D, but it still has happened. I read somewhere on this site to go to D before R momentarily, then R and back up and when you switch to D there is 0 delay. I don't do this every time, but tried it several times and it is a noticeable difference. i think that it is also programming related.

I have a manual and I know the feeling that you are describing. I think a lot of it is the drive by wire programming and not only the engine. I just took a 3200 mile road trip. With the more powerful (less efficient) final gearing on the manual it would pull up most grades in 6th gear. When the cruise was engaged, it pulled very smoothly. Without the cruise, it surged like you're talking about.

With the air conditioning on I get the odd peaks and valleys while accelerating through 2nd and 3rd gear with light throttle. With slight throttle adjustment I can make it pull smooth but I have to be intentionally trying to do it.

Do you need to know, or care?
Same. Makes me wonder if they programmed it to shift into a higher gear at too slow a speed for mpg reasons. At that speed around town I'm hardly pushing 1000 rpm. Wondering if the ECU is reading low RPMs and bumping the throttle a little, while the tranny is reading speed and keeping the gear high. Almost as if there was a trade off between a higher gear and low RPM. Couldn't quite get a match up between the engine and the tranny at a certain speed range. Not quite sure though, just my thoughts.

To me, what you are describing is the engine management backing off timing while under load (impending knock?) and is a different feeling to the V-tec like power band(s). I found that running pure gas has helped considerably.. In my neck of the woods that means premium fuel bc everything else has ethanol in it. I know, I know, wasting money- flame if u want.
