I'm currently watching the movie Contagion. Possible in real life? A fast acting virus with no cure? People dying left and right?

    What's your opinion?

I think it is possible. Don't know if we'll ever see it but, yes could happen.

Things like Ebola are too hot to live long enough to impact all of us. In other words the victims die before it can be spread too far.

Didn't even think of AIDS. I guess only because it's not something you get by just being around it...??? But, yup.

Most of the health organization agree it is possible but not on a world wide scale, small country maybe. Most that are that deadly kill to quick or don't live long enough out of the body.

We have some that do either of those, but not both.

Well think of the Black Plague back then it didn't take but a week or 2 to die from the plague.
The Hot Zone is a really good book. There are ton's on viruses that if we did not have the medical and microbiological knowledge and means to treat, cure, and kill would just wipe out the planet before anybody knew what to do.

    Pathology

The*Zaire ebolavirus*VP35 protein which has specific sites in order to bind to dsRNA(Leung et al., 2010)[6]Out of any species of the*Ebolavirus, the Zaire species is by far the most lethal. The fatality rate can reach up to 90% in some cases and death occurs within days of the initial infection(Leung et al., 2010)[28]. The symptoms include: shock, fever, and internal coagulation which can determine how rapidly the virus is replicated. The host is usually human, however the virus can be spread to primates. There is a protein called the Ebola viral protein 35 (VP35) which is a cofactor for the Ebola RNA polymerase and this complex is needed for viral production(Leung et al., 2010)[29]. The virulence factor for the*Zaire ebolavirus*is when VP35 binds to double strand RNA (dsRNA). Recently, an end-cap was discovered for the VP35 protein, which are hydrophobic molecules attached to the end tail. This end-cap actually helps the VP35 protein bind to dsRNA(Leung et al., 2010)[30]. This end-cap can also mimic the espression of RlG-l-Like receptors (RLR) which is one of the reasons the virus is so successful in taking down the hosts immune system. The VP35 protien is a great target when treating the*Ebolavirus[31]. There have been two different methods tested which are by using nucleic acids and siRNA molecules. This is the FGI-103 molecule used in the successful protection of mice from ZEBOV[7]When the immune system first reacts to the*Zaire ebolavirus, a large quantiy of chemokines, cytokines, and growth factors are produced by the body. Also, it was noted that there is lymphocyte apoptosis due to the apparent loss of peripheral CD4 and CD8 lymphocytes(Warren et al., 2010)[32]. Thus, it is easy for the virus to take over other cells if the lymphocyte production is low. In another study using a mouse strain of the*Zaire ebolavirus, the treatment using FGI-103 proved to be an efficient way to protect the mice(Warren et al., 2010)[33]. For the 10 control mice, the typical 90% mortality rate was observed. However, for the 10 mice that received 10mg/kg of FGI-103 after 1,000 PFU ZEBOV, they were protected and were healthy after 10 days(Warren et al., 2010)[34]. This study is promising in finding a treatment for*Zaire ebolavirus*while also keeping the mortality rate down.

Not fast acting by any means. Catching something and taking years to die from it isn't quick.

And no it's not possible. As soon as there was an outbreak the CDC would fucking drop on that place ASAP. Everyone would be accounted for, flights would stop, buses would be cancelled, highways would be closed.

Believe me when I say the government has planned for these emergencies. Quarantine officers have ridiculous power. I hear of one when SARS was big that there was a sick person on the plane. Quarantine officer (5'0" nurse) came to check it out and make sure everything was okay. Plane landed and the pilots go to get off. She's like, Umm, everyone has to stay on the plane till I check this PT out. If he's okay you can leave. They were like Ahhh, fuck you it's our plane we'll get off if we want. She politely told them they can either stay on this plane voluntarily or she can have them close the door and tow the fucking plane out into the middle of the tarmac until the quarantine period is over.

    They chose to stay on.

I've also heard of workers who've been exposed who are told to stay home till they are over it go out and break quarantine to go run errands. They sent medical personal to go get them and escort them home. If you resist, guess who gets arrested?
