Currently own a 2011 prerunner AC. I always find myself ogling 1st gens though, so I went to the dealership to check out a 2004 manual 4x4 v6 xtracab, TRD offroad, SR5, 65k miles. Everything looks fine other than some pretty ugly cosmetic issues. Paint is scratched in 3 or 4 small places to the point of beginning to rust, and the tailgate is bent (but still functional). Bed liner is pretty beat up.

Sales rep asking $15k for it, offered to fix the body rust and replace the tailgate, and will offer $20k as trade-in for my 2011.

    Thoughts or advice?

I check every once in a while, here and there, and generally I see similar trucks (although usually with 100k+ miles) trying to go for $16-17k. And then I come here and see people who have bought 2003/2004 4x4s with 75000 miles for $9-10k. I don't know how to get that lucky =\

Oops, meant "offer 20k" for my 2011. Sales rep said that was a "very aggressive offer".

    He thinks it's aggressive to offer $20k for a 2011 while selling you a 2004 for $15k?

I traded my 2007 Tacoma in with 50k miles on it back in August 2009 for $20k!

Screw that dealership...keep your 2nd gen.

ask for 22k for your truck and if they fix everything you want it for 14k. then id do it and mod the shit out of it

no. if you have to have a 1st gen, buy outright, NOT from a dealership. can save 5k easy.

Seems like a lot of money for the 04. I paid $15,500 out the door for my 39k mile 2003, Xcab, 4x4, 2.7L, 5spd.

    I say keep your 2011.

That truck would be listed $20k or over easily here. All just depends on the area.

The regional pricing diversity of 1st gen Taco's amazes me. My area its not uncommom for well maintained 00-04 tacos with 100k+ to go for $15-17k. Thats why i flew to get mine...and best part was driving it back =)

Add me to the don't do it. You have a great Yota. I honestly believe you'd regret it after the deal.

And, I also agree there's quite a bit of range between market prices.

I don;t know if you can do it, but if you can lay out 7-10K, you could get a second truck. If you can't that's cool--I understand your desire for a 1st gen. I picked up a 2000 SR5 4X4, loaded with ARB bumper, ARB lockers, aftermarket shocks/leafs, etc., for $7K. I got a steal in my opinion, and it's nice having both a 1st and 2nd gen.

If you can swing it, I would just keep my eye out and if you see a truck you like, try to get a note to the owner or contact the owner, you never know...mayber they will be ready to sell.
