I've used http://bushducks.com I think this is one of the sites he has referenced in the past for closures.

Guess it's time to sign up. I got this screen when I scrolled down and skipped the site altogether. It is free though, so I was just plain lazy.Screen Shot 2017-03-19 at 9.50.16 AM.jpg

The closure is very new from what I can find, and according to the official map does not cover the entire trail. So, here's your resource post:
    • Traildamage ran this on Sept. 24th, 2016, and updated the trail page on Oct. 19th. They make no mention of the closure.
    • The official MVUM currently published on the website makes no mention of the closure and does not show the road as being seasonal. The map is dated as 2016 on the website (here) and the map itself contains no more specific date.
    • The South Platte Ranger District page doesn't appear to have a road status page like some other districts, but they do have the standard alerts and notices section in which you'll find Order 2016-15 Seasonal Prohibition of Motor Vehicles on Roads and Trails under the closures section, which is dated November 1st, 2016 (and is effective for five years). Page 2 lists specific mileposts on road 105 (which is what Slaughterhouse is as far as I can tell from comparing the Traildamage and MVUM maps) affected by the closure which is seasonal Jan 1 to May 15, annually. There is a map exhibit on page 8 which shows the sections (milepost ranges) covered by the order. The maps is at such a scale that it makes it difficult to see where the closure takes effect, but as far as I can tell it's at the ridgeline, with everything on the south/west side of the ridge (ie, in Slaughterhouse proper) being affected while the sections leading up to the ridge are not.
So there you go, official sources and links.

Do it! It's free and worth it. Plus you'll be able to leave trip reports on trails if you want. Really helps out.

Different forest, different management, so that's probably why they don't have road status pages. They only have it for 'trails', of the hiking/and OHV kind. Definitely some things certain units do that it would be really nice if others did.

TY for that. I kept seeing references to a lawsuit and settlement and how it's impacted the MVUM (like them putting up GIS files as a condition of said settlement), but I didn't see any short version summaries of what/when the suit was and hadn't had time to go looking. One thing's for sure, based on the maps in that order I linked to above, I knew there was a whole lot more than just Slaughterhouse that was affected. I like the optimism of the forest guy quoted though - 'We don't have money for gates, we just expect people will obey the signs.'

That part that REALLY bothers me is this:

    image.jpg

Aka no motors allowed, but if you have a snowmobile with a motor, that's cool.

I wish tracks for trucks were affordable, I'd roll up with those lol

I would like that 10x if I could. Same thing, I caught that at the end and like, WTF? Because a) I bet my truck is quieter than a snowmobile, and b) MOTORIZED MEANS MOTORIZED. It's really just a poor choice of wording on their part, because other forests have seasonal closures but still allow motorized vehicles (as in snowmobiles or I guess the outfitted/modified bikes) by basically closing it seasonally to everything over 50" in width. I learned that while working on the 'full-size trail' map. But still, if the main argument was wildlife disturbance, then it should have been all motorized vehicles, period. I'm sure the plaintiffs would like to see it that way too, so maybe it was a compromise with the 'OHV' people?

A snowmobile on snow doesn't cause any damage to a road, whereas a vehicle on a potentially wet, muddy road can mess it up.

A person in the FB group "Colorado: Expedition" posted up a real nice clean list with the "common" trail names/numbers and closure dates. Here is the link:

Resource damage was not the issue for closure.

So when the Forrest service was required to create the MMUV all the old roads were considered new and fell under the rules that this enviromentalist exploited.

Exactly, per their argument motorized vehicles terrorize the woodland creatures (thus reasoning for seasonal closures during winter with food scarce) but the ones that have to stick to designated trails are bad, the ones who can run down Bambi where ever she tries to hide, heck their alright...
