    I feel your pain: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/roof-damage-need-advice.378123/

I initially looked into putting a roof rack on it to hide the damage, but that comes with a whole new set of issues for an access cab. I ended up filing an insurance claim and getting repeatedly fucked. First, I went to an Allstate preferred shop so that the work would be guarantied. Thank goodness I did because they did a terrible job and bodged everything. They replaced the roof skin and all that that entails. There was a big run in the paint when I picked it up. I took it back and they buffed through the clear coat to get it out, and killed the rubber window seal in the process. I complained to Allstate, and was assigned an adjuster that deals with claims of poor work against their preferred shops. He was so shocked by what he saw that he told me not to take it back and that he would find a new shop to resolve the issues. Well, it turns out that most shops don't want to get involved fixing another shop's work, so nobody in the entire county would accept the job. He finally sent me to the next county over to a shop they hold in reserve for really bad situations. It was a Chevy dealership, so how embarrassing is that? Anyway, they had to replace the roof skin a second time, and the back window had to be replaced because not only did the first shop mess up the seal, by they also tried to hid a chip that they caused on the edge of the glass. They also used glue to put the headliner back in, and a big wad of tar-like adhesive was found behind the third brake light - which was leaking by this point. Anyway, they first shop charged Allstate over $3k that they had to give back. The second shop spend over $5k making it right, and this plus well over a month of rental cars were billed to shop number one...'cause fuck them!

I truly hope that your experience is better, but all's well that ends well. My truck is fixed correctly and it looks fine. I learned a lot going through this process, and popped in on the second shop unannounced often to make sure they were doing it right...and I racked up the rental car miles!

This right here is exactly why you don’t ever take your shit where your insurance company recommends.
All they are doing is sending you somewhere that will do it for less of their money.

HA! Yup - county. None of the other shops would touch it, and I live in Franklin County - Columbus Ohio - and there are a millions of people here. Not sure if it's professional courtesy or CYA, but that's what happened. The "fixer" shop did right by me, so in the long run I'm glad I ended up with them. Good guys at Coughlin Chevrolet of Pataskala.

So I did just have a guy at a shop look at it and he seemed skeptical that it would be easy. I heard the number 750 so I could eat that. But shit I don't really want this to be a thing...

And no offense to all of my homies in here.
But please don’t go using plungers and suction cups and hair driers, and computer cleaner, or dry ice, or glue,
Or whatever the fuck else people that have no fucking clue what they are talking about recommend you to do.

You’re paying damn near 50k for that truck truck...it needs a roof panel, so don’t fuck around.
Call your insurance company, file a claim, and take it to your nearest Toyota certified collision center.

It's a big job, but putting on a new skin isn't that technically complex if done correctly. It's taking everything else off and putting it back that takes time. The skin itself is mostly glued on from the factory and only spot welded in a few spots near the windshield. It's not like the old days where stuff has to be cut out, welded back in, and body worked to hide the fix. The seams are under the plastic strips on the roof. I've now noticed that most new cars are like this. Don't get me wrong, people can fuck anything up if they don't pay attention, but in theory the truck should come back literally as good as new. Mine did.

Just a heads up though about using insurance. Guess what will happen when the time comes for you to sell the truck and they run a CarFax? If you get a pro to do it, make sure it isn’t reported.

Well...maybe. My wife had a car that was in no less than 4 accidents requiring insurance claims before we sold it. We ran the car fax ourselves to see what it would look like and to provide to prospective buyers. None of them were listed. There is, (or was) a payout limit that you had to hit before it would be listed, and she never got there with any of the four. One was over $3k, but still not shown. This was several years ago, but that was our experience.

You won’t be able to apply it with precision, nor will you reach exact temps for the best result.
When you start to expand and contract thin metal like car panels, there is a learning curve and can easily go too far one way or the other.
