Hi new to Toyota and this forum
Question: does the timing cover have to be removed to replace the head gasket?
Only asking because dealership replaced the head gasket snd now my timing cover is leaking.
Is this a coincidence or did they remove this cover snd not silicone it properly?
Thsnks for any and all help!!

    Welcome.
Yes the timing cover must be removed to replace the headgasket so if it's leaking at the timing cover then it wasn't properly sealed.
Take it back to them, they should make it right.

Yes, dealership should’ve properly seal it as it’s a known issue in the earlier production Tacomas. What year and make is your Tacoma?

Hi Thanks guys for the speedy replies.
    It is a 2010 2wd 2.7
They are looking at it right now so I’ll keep you posted.
Thanks DM93 I was told they would have to remove it to replace the head gasket but wasn’t sure! Thanks for confirming.

    update june 5 2023
    Hi All
Dealership repaired the leaking timing cover at 0 cost to me and I was hoping my problems were over.

the reason I knew the timing cover was leaking was a lot of oil loss on a 5 hour drive ( from full - second dot on dipstick) to barely reading on dip stick upon arrival home. Put truck up on a hoist and saw the leakage near timing cover.

So now the cover is repaired drove 500 km and the oil is down from full - second dot to level at first dot on dipstick ( looks like about 2 quarts to re-fill to second dot full.)

2 quarts oil used in 500km or 300 miles

no blue smoke , no stain on my driveway
Have read about oil consumption on 2.7l 2010 motors snd rings are normally the cause.
So question- would they check the rings when replacing the head gasket? I am no mechanic so have no idea just looking for advice!

    Thanks in advance!

I'm having same issue. Head gasket replaced at 130k. I'm consuming oil at a slower pace and it's more significant on longer trips at highway speeds.

Did you ever find the cause?
