Question for you guys that are having a crank but no start problem:

Have you noticed if the immobilizer light is flashing when this happens? That would tell you right away that it's a key sensor problem. Maybe there is a bad run of immobilizer components in the 2010s? The OP was able to drive home with no issue as long as the truck was kept running, sounds like a key recognition/immobilizer problem.

Does anyone have an additional RFID device on their keyring that could be interfering? Does anyone else remember the problems Mobil gasoline had with their "speed pass"? Those things were causing crank-but-no-start problems.

Is it possible that the immobilizer would cut out the starter also? I had a Ford Ranger that would cut the starter out also. I know this because I had an entry only key made and once tried to start the truck with it. The immobilizer light would flash and no crank. Just for giggles (I like to mess around with this stuff sometimes) I jumped the starter relay to get it to crank with the key in the on position. It cranked, but no start.

Just trying to help, sounds like just the v6's at this point (immobilzer equipped)

According to two different dealerships and an independent mechanic who I've known nearly 12 years now and the wife for life, states that the immobilizer only prevents ignition and would not cause the starter to not engage whatsoever like my truck did. All stated further that it was very unlikely to be the key or the immobilizer given the symptoms.

It has happened to me in cold and somewhat warmer weather. Today it rained in my area. Really strange, starts fine after sitting all night first thing in the a.m. Starts right up. This afternoon went to lunch, instant startup. After about 3-4 hours sitting outside work, took me by surprise and wouldn't turn over. Like it's out of gas or starved. I've tried the prime thing in the past and it doesn't matter. You would think I had a carburetor the way it behaves. As if I could pump the pedal a couple times it might do it. Of course I didn't do that. After turning on off on the third time it turned over. Even then it's almost not a quick start that I'm used to from a new auto. It's rather embarrassing because it's a new car and shouldn't behave like this.

Could it be some type of vacuum, sensor, or vapor lock of sorts (if there is such a thing)?

Is EVERYBODY that is having this problem driving a '10? Maybe they reprogrammed something in the computer of the 2010's? My advice is that everyone that is reading this and having these problems contact Toyota and MAYBE they might start looking into this and come up with some type of solution. :( Oh and please take it easy on me guys, I'm just trying to help. :)

Reports to both Toyota and NHTSA. Toyota called today, I missed the call, they left message, tried at least 10 times, case manager never answered and I wasn't given the option to leave a message. Supposedly should hear from him tomorrow.

I had a similiar problem on my Saturn. Happened after I had the crank position sensor changed. Replaced it with an after market. The common denominator for me was heat. Car would start up fine after sitting overnight. Drive it to the gas station, shut it off and then no go. Would happen on a hot day sitting in the sun. Park it in the shade and bam start right up. Could have been a coincidence. Don't know. Finally got tired of parking everywhere where there was a slope. Car always started when I popped the clutch. Sold it during the winter months and bought my Tacoma. She's pretty much stock but still a good ride.

Just popped my cherry. Howdy all.

It hasn't happend again. I will have time this weekend and plan to check the resistance levels on the relay as your diagram shows. I'll update the first post Sunday probably with a "1 week later" kind of update. There's nothing really new to report as of yet except that it hasn't repeated the symptom since being back home.

In response to your update OP this is really all I can say, I'm sorry you are having this problem. This would be frustrating to anyone. Unfortunately, without throwing a bunch of parts at your truck in hopes of correcting the problem it can be quite difficult to diagnose an issue like yours since it occurs at random without leaving any trouble codes.

I hope everything works out in the long run for you and that you can feel safe that your truck won't strand you.

I understand, but from a consumer's perspective, am I to keep throwing money to pay for this truck? I could very well take the same approach. Understandably there are different consequences in each case, but Toyota has just seemed to throw their hands up, making me wonder if they don't just want me to called "foul" and make a Lemon Law claim. I've got some research to do and documentation to compile.......

I had this similar problem happen to me yesterday in my 09. I tried to start the truck but it wouldn't start right away. You can hear it turning but wouldn't start. I was thinking to myself WTF. It was a fairly warm day out. I tried again in 2 minutes and it started right away. I hope I don't end up like the OP. Maybe I have a bad battery but the truck is only a year old. I'll keep an eye on this

The OP had a no crank issue. My '09 does the same thing that happened to you every once in awhile. My '08 Accord was the same as well. With chipped keys these days it seems that it takes a second for the key to be recognized and if you try to start before that happens then you end up with an extended crank.

It seems to work for me to get in the truck and put the key in the ignition and wait an extra second or two before I attempt to crank.

This is a decision you have to make. For me personally, I would take the vehicle back to the dealer and tell them to keep it and have the service manager drive it for a couple of weeks until the problem is corrected while also attempting at getting a rental car approved by toyota or the dealer. I would not accept anything less, especially if I am required to still make payments. This sounds like the direction your heading.

Goodbye TW. I will stop in from time to time to see what the scoop is, but I won't be around like I have been. I just traded my 2010 in, I refuse to fight the fight with Toyota and the dealerships. Thank you all for the help and assistance. I wish you all well and hope the best for the future for each of you. I'm not going to go through a big back and forth about what happened or why I decided to do what I did.

    Again, thank you TW.
