Had this happen to me this morning after sitting all night it cranked over but wouldn't start and after about a 6sec crank it stumbled and started up I turned the truck off and haven't been able to reproduce it but it kinda pissed me off because my 09 only is 2 months old an has 3600 miles on it hope they find something I blame the key imobilizer my key was kinda dirty from being on my belt at work so maby it didn't read the key correctly I didn't look at the console light. Truck runs like a beast otherwise

Refer to my previous post in this thread. The OP had a no crank scenario. Your issue lies with the immobilizer and no fuel.

Also, before you put the key in the ignition notice the flashing immobilizer symbol on the center console. Stick the key in and wait for the symbol to shut off then turn the key. Hopefully this helps.

I'm in the exact same boat except mine DID happen while I was driving down the highway. Here's the whole story:

This is UNBELIEVABLE!!! I took my 2007 Toyota Tacoma in to the dealership six weeks ago because my engine and electronics shut off while I was driving down the highway. They said it was a bad battery... I asked how a bad battery could shut down the engine while driving! I know a little mechanics, enough to know that once the engine is started, it does not rely on the battery to continue running. I took it to an ASE certified mechanic who confirmed that the motor should not shut off while driving because of a bad battery. The worst part about this incident has been Toyota's customer service. The dealership could not explain how this was possible (because it's NOT) and Toyota's corporate customer service representative was rude and apathetic and said there is no one I can talk to about technical issues, that they rely on the dealership technicians. So I am suppose to believe that it is total coincidence that my Toyota died becuase of a bad battery, even though no one can explain to me how that can actually happen, while Toyota recalls hundreds of thousands of their vehicles for the EXACT SAME symptoms and claims it's known issue with a defective valve spring!!! My wife and I both drive Toyotas, I am going to sell them both and advise everyone I know to stay away if Toyota can not make this issue right.

If your battery had a major failure (like something similar to disconnecting the negative terminal) while the vehicle was running the engine would cease to operate, & certainly not crank over. While the battery is not responsible for vehicle electrical supply after initial start-up, it is a required component to complete the "circuitry" of the vehicle.
A 'shorted' battery or one with an 'open' terminal would definitely cause the problems you've described...
So although the failure of a battery causing the issues you describe is not a common problem, it is possible..

I REALLY appreciate your explanation MasterTech. I wish someone at Toyota had the knowledge and/or communication skills to explain it as you did. That is more of my beef than malfunction itself.

Once again, TacomaWorld has been a MUCH bigger help than the Toyota dealership or Toyota corporate.

This thread is proof that while toyota still makes a fine auto on par with the big 3 domestic manufacturers, it is no longer head & shoulders above the competetion in quality like it used to be. I have been a long time toyota customer & have to say their service departments are terrible, now I am sure some are great ones but Royal Toyota in Bloomington In is terrible. Given what I hear on TW it seems I am not the only one with a terrible excuse for a service dept, if the vehicles were as bullet proof as they were 10 yrs ago I would not even care. My taco has been in the shop multiple times & I swear these guys couln't find their ass with both hands & a road map pathetic.

SERVICE??? I will do everything I can not to do business with Toyota again. I think I'm gonna keep my Tacoma but I'm not buying from them again, not impressed with the vehicle or the customer service especially considering their typically higher cost.

Toyota's customer service has been going downhill for a few years already. They expanded their dealership base way too quickly and most likely are still trying to operate warranty expenses under their baseline from a decade ago. My wife switched over from lexus to cadillac and is happy. I love my taco but when its time to get rid of it I wont be going back to toyota =(

I have a 2001 Tacoma . My red immobilizer icon light fell to pieces and now I have 4wires hanging loose. Just zipped tied them and put to side for a year now. Put new battery in yesterday and triggered immobilizer and had to leave truck at my storage unit because I can't find wiring diagram of dashboard red icon light. Red wire,Blue wire,Gray, wire and white wire. Can anyone help me out so I can get my truck running again and get back to fishing. Thanks

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
If no one is able to help you, you can get all of your diagrams on the Toyota Information System (TIS). It doesn't cost much and you can download and save the entire FSM as well as the wiring diagram.
