Checked mine... .55 quarts low. This was an unopened bottle.
    Trans Fluid.jpg

Couple things that might help some of those who aren't getting results....

When you jump from 4 to 13 with the wire then start your truck, make sure that you see at least 3 to 4 lights in the RPM cluster CONTINUE TO BLINK after all the other lights have stopped blinking . I initially made this mistake because I was looking for a specific light or just seeing any blinking lights.... I dunno.
If they're not blinking, use thicker gauge wire, which I had to do, and turn off the truck and try it again.

After doing the N to D back and forth and confirming the solid "D" came on for 2 seconds then went out, I removed the jumper wire, put it in Park and I waited about 6 minutes or so until the SOLID "D" came on.
The directions I had didn't mention exactly where the solid "D" would appear when the temperature hit minimum.
It shows up where the square red box is in this pic.... (I edited the pic to add the square box)
    Center Display.jpg

Also, I would advise anyone doing this to remove (or at least break loose and unscrew to the end) the filler plug FIRST so you don't accidentally burn your left forearm on the exhaust pipe :( AND so it's ready to quickly add before reaching max temp. If you don't need to add, then tighten/install the plug... no big.

(NOTE: The 5mm hex head check bolt says "check" on it, the filler nut (passenger side of trans) says "WS" on it)

I had my filler plug removed, all my tools, drain pan, ATF, pump, rags, etc ready so by the time the solid "D" showed up, I was checking the overflow (only 1 small drop came out, BTW) and was adding ATF within about 1 minute. Added .55 of a quart until fluid started to run out.

I didn't notice any symptoms but thought it might be wise to check considering my 40k investment.

This is SO easy. Don't bother driving to the dealer, dropping it off overnight to cool, and HOPE they actually, really check it.
This is a 15 minute process and you'll have the knowledge and peace of mind that it was done and done right.

I noticed smoother / quicker shifting for sure after they added almost one quart at the dealer. As far as from R to D, I honestly noticed a minimal difference. I think it may have more to do with RPM than anything. The RPMs on this truck are super high when cold. Way too high in my opinion to be shifting into reverse, then to drive. People say all vehicles are like this. I beg to differ. I've owned probably 25 cars in my life, many of them brand new. I've never experienced that before. I guess I'll just deal with it until I can get into a manual Taco in a few years.

I was wondering the same thing. When the truck gets up to operating temps and the thermostat opens up wouldnt that already have pumped fluid into that part of the system along time ago?

I guess that would depend on one's operating temp and what temp the stat opens.
One member did his check unpinned, and then pinned. He ended up adding an additional 0.6 quarts(the specified capacity of the cooling system) during the pinned check.
I did mine unpinned and then pinned; I didn't require additional fluid on the second check. Mine felt about the same after the first, unpinned check. After the second, pinned check, it's way better.
I wonder if having the stat open that long primes and purges some stuff, namely the torque converter.

Has anyone had the tranny get stuck in 4th on the freeway? It was in 6th, then I went to pass, it down shifted into 4th, then when I merged back and let off it was still in 4th... Shifted into "S" and put it into 6th and it stayed there when I put it back into "D". Did it a couple times... Then it stopped doing it.

My 16 Limited was 1 quart low. Took it to the Dealership and their was no hassle, the dealership did the check and found it was a quart low. They toped it off and now it seems 10x better. Also dodged the $120 bill for it with the warranty. I am not mad about this, it is unfortunate but keep in mind this is a new engine and trans. I had a 2011 Tacoma TRD OR before this and have not once regretted my decision to switch to the 2016.

I still have the issue of hard shifts when cold going from R to D. Other than that, my additional quart that was added was covered under warranty as well, but I learned a lesson, and will never have an automatic transmission again. In addition, as you noted, I won't buy a first year vehicle re-design ever again. Too many issues...

It's all minor stuff my man....!! Go with the flow... If the dealer won't check stuff... tell them to "stuff" it...(don't go back).. check it yourself... the truck will last for 20 yrs "if" "YOU" look after it...

    It's your truck......do what U gotta do....:canada:

That doesn't make much sense considering all of these issues pretty much carried over from second gen.

To be honest when you consider how many tens of thousands they have already sold and there's only a few issues for a few people, it's quite a successful launch.

Don't get me wrong. Overall, I'm very happy and you're right. It's all small stuff in the big picture. Just saying I had a 2013 TRD OR w a 6 speed manual and I felt that drivetrain was MUCH better. Live and learn I'll def go w a manual next time around...

    Makes sense.

Overall just gotta take everything in the internet with a grain of salt. People tend to post EVERY problem they have, but never post when there isn't an issue. It makes it seem like the situations are much worse than they are. There are tens of thousands of these on the road that are flawless. They just have no reason to post

Can anyone provide a complete write up on how to check the automatic transmission fluid? I am getting lost on when to pin the obd2 connector and which pins are which and what the D means when it pops up on the dash...

There is a Toyota document listed at the bottom of the first post
    POLL - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...be-low-on-fluid-directly-from-factory.405642/

For the guys thinking about skipping the pinning procedure , keep in mind that we believe the thermostat was not pinned at the factory. This would account for 1/4 of a quart missing if they skipped the pinning procedure .
We also believe the complete transmission cooling system was " NOT " filled at the factory . This would account for 1 - 2 quarts
This is explained in the poll
