You may be right. You've got me second guessing myself now although I was pretty sure when I typed that.

Alrighty guys, I just got back from the dealer with the described whine between 50 and 60 on my second diff (already had my original diff replaced to "fix" the exact same issue). Thy said that they heard the noise again, though not as loud as the first time, and they opened a case with corporate. Since they have already replace my rear diff once they aren't jumping straight to that this time. I have an appointment for next Monday to drop the truck off (they will have a loaner ready for me), and leave it overnight. They will be removing my driveline, checking it out, rebalance it, put it back on the truck, and then go test the truck in 4-low, 4-high, 2wd, highway speeds, ect. Then we will go from there.

So that is where I am at now, which is better than what I was expecting. Figured I would be told that it isn't right, but that I would need to hold tight for a TSB or Recall. Can't be more satisfied with how the dealership has treated me!

Hate you're going through this again, but glad they're working to make it right. Looking forward to hearing their new solution.

It is definitely kind of annoying, but this is the only issue I have had (minus the LCA Howl, but that was easy), and my dealership has been super easy to work with, so I just chalk it up to the "first year of a redesign" thing. I'm sure eventually they will get it sorted out for me. I will post updates as they come. With any luck they will figure out a fix!

I feel bad for @smitty99 who has seemed to have every single possible issue with his rig....hang in there man!

I do not have any shaking or vibrating. Just the noise.

That was me, but no longer.
I've had the decel at 100km/h whine for a while, and I've noticed that it's getting louder. I can also hear a whine at lower speeds (80km/h) during light accel.
Not sure if having them swap it out now is such a great idea for me, as we're now hearing that the replacements could be acting up too.

Count me in as well. Mine whines at 50-53 mph under light throttle. Sounds like I should get it documented but hold out on replacement in hopes Toyota does an RCA. I have a 2000 mile road trip coming up in one week, hopefully it holds together.

Mine is getting a little louder at 59 mph. Also I noticed at 77-80 the diff makes a noticeable "whirring" noise. Ahhh yes....bringing back memories of my 2002 ford with 140k miles on it (that had never had the diff fluid replaced once and slowly weeped fluid for years - neglect on my part, learned my lesson).

I wonder what is going to happen with the PRO. It has the same rear locking diff as the OR but is one inch taller. If the driveline is somehow causing this, it's going to be worse in the PRO

It is only going to get worse later down the line. I am pretty sure it is the rear diff. Probably the bearings or ring gear. Had a dealer forget to replace the nut on rear axle..fluid ran dry for a couple of miles and the howl was very similar to that...just at lower speeds and significantly louder.

My sisters brand new 2016 DCSB SR5 4x4 with 2600 miles has the faint sound of rear diff howl starting now too. I drove it today and heard it

Mine is only at ~6k miles right now. I noticed it a few thousand miles ago, but figured I'd wait and bring it up at my 5k. At the 5k they told me they didn't have time to drive at 59 mph.

It is very noticeable and to see you say later that they said it is "normal" is really disappointing....I'm really getting tired of the "normal" line. Normal doesn't mean OK. It may be "normal" for their 2016 Tacoma but it is not "normal" for a vehicle.

I have my work order from when they replaced my differential and it clearly states there was premature wear on the differential leading to failure. I don't know how toyota can now say this is normal

Interesting, when I had my first one replaced they told me that the dealership won't open the diff up. They and the field engineer both thought something was wrong, and they said the procedure is to send the whole assembly back to the factory. The factory will disassembly the diff and figure out what is wrong. Not sure if the final word ever gets relayed back to dealer or not though.

Good luck, man! Hope it doesn't turn into a total shit show. It amazes me how much some of these dealerships can get away with...

I'm surprised how long your trucks went with no noise, mine only has about 1,200 miles and the diff. was howling loud enough to hear over the stereo. Started noticing around 500 miles.

Mine was the same. Not sure when I started hearing it, but it was loud enough for me to take it in at ~2,800 miles. My second one, I almost heard it right away....by 500 miles for sure...this sucks I hope there is a tsb or full on recall for this soon.
