I am taking my second one back Tuesday afternoon. I am expecting them to say that something probably isn't right, but that they aren't sure what. Probably open a case with Toyota and tell me to hold tight. I agree with you though, I feel like there is no way they will tell me it is normal after they spent ~$3k to "fix" it once before. I will update you all Tuesday night.

If the job is done properly it should have no comeback on that same issue.
Trouble is, not everyone is comfortable or competent with that type repair as proper backlash and pinion bearing pre-load needs to be performed.
In other words, the comeback is not on you...This time! HAHA!

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

Actually there's probably more to it. Could be something like driveline angle. So yea the job could have been done correctly to replace the parts. But the parts (differential) might not be the Root issue. Also the diff assembly comes pre-assembled. Gear work not needing to be done. It's remove & replace

It used to be a dealer only replaced the broken piece under warranty, maybe this is different now or it's Toyota thing, either way IDK in this case, but I would think pinion bearing pre-load would still need to be checked or adjusted.
Drive angle I don't see as a problem if your truck is stock like the rest of us. Unless you're constantly going at weird angles, even so, Toyotas are made for that. Whatever the issue is, I hope they find and fix.
    Best of luck!
    Cheers!

Or toyota dropped the ball on design somewhere for this particular set up

If that's the case they'd be a chit load of similar TRD problems. I'm leaning to improper installation

Well if 9 or 10 of us have the problem here imagine how many must have the same problem who never even look at forums.

Besides you I only know about the bulldog. But I believe there is a TSB on loose rear differential cover bolts as a culprit for leak. I don't think that TSB would applies to you though.

Chirping high pressure fuel pump is an easy fix. Just get some Lucas upper cylinder lube fuel treatment and put 200ml in on next fill up. Not saying it will fix them all but it worked on mine. Put it in a week ago and the chirping stopped and hasn't come back...

I have the whining noise from the rear end when I feather the gas at around 55mph. It's getting louder, I can often hear it over the radio. I was planning to bring this up at my first 5K service in a few weeks. Will having done the rear differential breather mod cause me any hassles with warranty work on this? Should I revert it to stock before I go in?

I'd play it safe and revert. Sure you could argue all you want but why risk the hassle?

Something that I have noticed is that a vast majority (not all though) of the people having this issue have TRD Off Roads...

I wonder how much of it has to do with the fact that I can hear everything going on outside of the truck too. I'm serious, in this truck I can hear a chain rattling or suspension squeaking on a car/truck two lanes over coming up behind me on the freeway. The amount of odd noises that make it into the cabin in this truck amazes me. Seems like certain noises just blast right past any sort of soundproofing they have.

Looks like I'll wait longer to bring it up. No sense in going through all the hassle if it is just going to come back. Plus I really want that driveline fix (hopefully) to come out first. Hopefully it doesn't get much louder for you smitty.

Well there goes any hope I had for them actually having figured out a fix. Mine is still at the dealership waiting on parts. Asked the service guy today about having the transmission TSB done while it was there and was told that they couldn't perform any other warranty work while they had an open RO for a separate warranty claim - which Corporate told me was not true. These guys just make no sense to me at this point.

Yes, but some are automatics and some are manuals which is important to note because they have different differentials. I don't mean just different ratios, I mean different designs. The autos have the carryover 8" rear and the manuals use the new-for-Tacomas 8.75" rear.

The second dealership I took mine to told me that they thought it was something that was probably unique to the locking diff., and they wouldn't drive another model to compare to. They wanted me to come back this week and drive an OR they were supposed to have on the lot.

Thought the TRD OR Auto uses the 8.75"
