Sadly, the only way techs find out about the newer updates is if they actually read all the new releases on TIS.
Of the 20 techs in my shop, I am the only one who keeps up on the radio update releases. It's sad.
I download the new files and provide USB drives for the techs to use to update the radios. they have every file on them, so they work for all 2013+ vehicles. I made it idiot proof..because that's what they are. Idiots. They can't figure out if a radio is current or not, despite it being written clear as day on TIS.

Because of this, when I saw the new update, I figured I would spread the word here knowing that other dealerships are just like mine...oblivious to the new updates.

Honestly, toyota should be like Ford, and have customers do it themselves.
Ford has you punch in your VIN on their site, it tells you there is an update, you download it, and try installing onto your SYNC system. It throws an error 4 times, you get frustrated, give the radio the Fonzie tap, then it finally works. No trips to the dealership and being told there is no update available, when there actually is.

I've noticed my head unit will reset once when I first start up the vehicle sometimes, but I've never had it happen while operating the vehicle after that. Thanks for posting the TSB.

I had mine updated this morning (010189 --> 01018C)...They mentioned that they didn't know there was an update and it took them extra time to download it...They have been great to deal with and I didn't mind waiting...I am not sure if this fixed my issue (receiving text while backing up - reboots) since I have not had an occasion yet to test it...

Consider yourself lucky you have a dealer you like. I can't stand mine... took my Taco in last week to have the alignment checked and got it back w/ the steering wheel off 5° clockwise. End of dealer rant...

So, what can we do to get Toyota to release this info to the general public instead of having to go to the dealership each time I need to do an update? Yes, I'm a nerd and I keep up on updates for the cars, phones, etc., but this just kills me that they make it difficult to do something that is rather easy to do. It would let your dealership techs work on the money making stuff instead of plugging in a radio for a warranty TSB.

I've had that. Once in a few months mine will freeze on startup and require the truck to be turned off and on again. Also had my head unit freeze during operation once or twice during the year I've owned it. The dealership has been great with applying the latest software updates, but some issues still persist. I mentioned this the last time I was in and they instantly said they would order me a new head unit and do a swap. I hadn't even considered that as an option. I'm guessing they've seen a few trucks with these problems.

Not a huge deal as it happens quite infrequently, but still, annoying when it does happen.

Yeah, better to get rid of it NOW, and see if the newer one is better.....before the warranty goes away..!

Still a few years on the warranty, so I'm not in too much of a rush. In any case, I'd anticipate the new head unit to be arriving any day now. I'm not entirely sure it'll be any better, but I guess we'll see.

Sometimes mine acts up, doesn't show info, weird connectivity issues.

I press and hold the power button to reset it and it usually clears up easy.

I realize this is an old thread, but figured I give it a shot. I put in an aftermarket amp and sub. Shortly afterwards I was unable to adjust my volume. I went into that hidden menu, and when I turn off the speaker check, I can adjust my volume again, only problem is that as soon as I leave the menu, it turns on again.is there a way to keep it off permanently?

Since last update it has not done this to me anymore. However I don't have the JBL system.

I have a 2015 Taco with JBL Navigation. Mine started resetting with every phone either receiving or making calls. The dealership had no idea and after 2 months of troubleshooting, found out it was the special characters in my phone book on the radio causing it. I took them all off, and now, no issues at all. Been about 3 weeks with no issues.
