    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

I'll take a picture of the 2 VSS that I have and post them later today.

Not going out to work on it quite yet. Too f'n cold.

And I'm a little annoyed at Modesto Toyota right now. We went to mount the T-case last night and found out their shit for brains parts guy gave me the wrong bolts. So now we have to go over to @foxrcing07 and snag one off his and see if we can find the right ones at the hardware store.

But I'm definitely going to have to drink more coffee before I do anything... This project is wearin me out!

It's located in the T-case cover. You can see it in the hole here.

Removing it (and cutting the ear off the shift rail) allows 2 Hi - 2 Low and 4 Hi - 4 Low to be independent of each other.

    Ok, here's what we've got

Left = the VSS from the trans that was removed from the truck.

Right = the VSS from the T-case that is going in to the truck.

I think you need one of these to convert the mechanical to electrical VSS.

    http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/toyo...cal-speedometer-vss-adapter-301447-1-kit.html

    - Why did you change your lights to blue? Just looks or another reason?
    - Any tips or thing you would have done different in R&R for the trans?
    - How bad was replacing the rear main seal on the engine and did you have to drain the oil?

Thank you. You are about 2 months ahead of me so i am soaking it all in.

Well that’s just bizarre. That’s either a broken electrical VSS, or a cable driven VSS meaning it came from a 1995-1997 truck.

I didn't have the sensor on the right at all from my 1996 4Runner transfer case. I had a plug sitting in the VSS hole. So I bought a sensor on eBay that is identical to your right one but with an electrical plug installed. Besides the missing mounting bracket on yours to bolt it up.

My whole VSS was less than the electrical plug conversions that Low Range and Marlin Crawler sell but I'm not 100% sure what longevity will be on my eBay VSS versus an OEM Toyota VSS. Time will tell I guess. Then I just extended my harness to reach back to my transfer case.

The plastic gear my sensor came with was 33 teeth and was way off for my 4:10 gear ratio. A couple 4WD conversions on Tacoma World involved a guy buying multiple gears from a Toyota yard and sending back what didn't work. I found the 30 tooth gear to be the most accurate gear for 4:10 and it's only thrown off .5mph by my slightly larger 265/75/16 tires. But since you have a gear from your transfer case you might be good to go already there.

Here is the full sensor on eBay that I'm running.

Thank you! Figured the stock 4WD symbol was too generic for me, so I wanted to take it a step up. I scanned the original lens in Photoshop and recreated it with several layers of Projector Transperancies glued together.

You swapped pans from your A340E to your A340F? Is that correct? When I compared pans on mine, the A340E pan did not have the same capacity as the A340F.

Correct. They do not. The A340E has a different capacity than the A340F, thus I don't recommend re-using the original pan. The ATF capacity difference is very negligible. The Torque Converter holds a few more quarts, all-in-all I think my truck took 17 Quarts of ATF.

Only thing I changed was my output shaft. Figured it wouldn't make a difference either way but I might be wrong. I still have the A340F sitting in pieces in my storage shed.

I really have no idea why there is a difference in fluid capacity. Could be the capacity of the torque converter, since they are different (stall speed) between the E and F.

My pans are exactly the same capacity. At least the dimensions of the pans are the same.

Interesting....for my 99, the pan on the A340E was obviously not as deep as the pan I ended up having to order for the A340F, because of an issue with the dipstick. Glad it worked out easier for you than it did for me!

Regarding oil pan capacity I think it depends on what year. My original 04 2WD and my replacement 04 4WD tranny's have the same oil pan and same dip stick tube. It seems that somewhere before 03 the pans were not the same as was the dip stick tube. I measured every aspect of my two and they are the same in every way.

    Just FYI.

When I swapped to my A340F I ended up using my A340E pan because the F was pretty busted from the previous owner. I also swapped in my E’s torque converter and valve body though, so I think it’s pretty negligible at that point
