I have a 2019 tacoma toyota. And want information on updating the navigation system. Since all the changes in exit numbers, the Nav system is not correct. Plus takes me long way sometimes.

You can purchase new SD cards from the dealership. You can get some on eBay or Amazon as well but those tend to be a year or so old. At least last time I looked.

I'm curious Redwings44, you mention a SD card, where would you put the SD card in to update the navigation?

I used the navigation system exactly once and it was so horrible and clunky that I never bothered again. I just use Maps on my iPhone and it just works, and not only that, it automatically updates with changes whenever there's an iOS update. I'm sure Android's are the same.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
In the SD slot on the head unit.

    Owners manual should show this.

I paid $350 for a Garmin Navigation unit for my RV and it came with free lifetime map updates. I bought a Toyota navigation unit for $37,500 and I have to pay to get map updates!

There is a spot in the bottom right that looks like a pop-out panel. You should be able to push one one side to be able to lift up the other side. The SD card is below that.

If it’s the same as my wife’s 2016 RAV4, it’s horrible. We figured out one reason it's so bad. If you’re on an expressway and it says 0.5 mile to the exit ramp. It’s actually 0.5 mile to the intersection, not the ramp. So, the off ramp will be sooner than the intersection.
Eventually, we want to swap out the head unit for one we can use Apple Car Play. I’m glad I can use Apple Car Play in my Tacoma.

Did your $350 Garmin come with an rv?

Yes, I wish I could buy a Garmin that would somehow plug into the back of the OEM Head unit, so I could then use Garmin. I have had several garmins for years, and they come with free upgrades for maps. I used to update them yearly, but I admit I haven't updated them in a couple of years because I have been using my OEM Navigation. That being said, I have to admit that Garmin is WAY better, such as, with the OEM unit, if I am driving down the road and I am wondering if there is a Costco gas somewhere nearby, it won't let me enter information while I am driving. I somewhat understand that, but heck, even if I wanted my passenger to look for me, she can't because it won't let me while the vehicle is in motion. Also, the OEM navigation shows previous destinations in the order of when you last used them. It would be much better if it would show by order of distance away from current location, as again, the Garmin does. And as others have mentioned, you have to purchase an upgraded map sd card from the dealer, unless someone out there has come up with a hack! Now there's a project for a good Tacomaworld tech!

Google > Garmin if you have cell service. The only down side with Garmin (and OEM) is it doesn't get regular updates such as construction, crashes, or seasonal roads (ask me how I know).

My dynamic is up to date. DOT closed a road for bridge repair and that very day it was closed on my GPS and had me detour.

Another great option is "Waze" app. It goes right to my unit when I plug my iPhone in the USB port. This is being used in my 2021 so I am not sure about 2019 year. It is right on the money for free and it is interactive as far as hazards traffic and police. Very simple to use.

Recommend using the Waze app on your smartphone, but also load the Toyota Entune app on the phone and update your head unit software, it has a button to do that.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I have the upgraded audio that has dynamic navigation and I like it. Cloud updates keep it current with the latest maps and POI, and I use voice to find destinations. Traffic updates along the route are also pretty accurate. No problems at all with it so far. I realize I will have to pay for the service once the 3-year trial is over, but so far I think it's a keeper...for me anyway.

Yeah not so much with me. It has zig-zagged me through a town where I kind of knew where I was going, instead of taking me straight to my destination. This past winter it tried taking me to the main road in one area but didn't realize that road was closed for the winter.

Yeah well, I am sure Waze is good, as I hear people talking about it all the time. But for me, the reason why I wanted a builtin navigation, was because I did NOT want to plug in my phone. I do not use mobile data, which is pretty much what I would need in order to use my phone for such things while driving, such as waze, and other things. My phone is a phone and yes, I do use the camera function too, but that is it. I get one year of service and 1500 minutes to use with a ton of data and text messages, and I get all of this for only $75 a year, with discount coupons. The regular price is only $125 for that, so I am WAY ahead of the game compared to anyone else! Even at the regular price, that is barely over $10 a month for cellphone service. NOBODY out there can beat that with a stick! Anyway, long answer but I like things that are builtin, now that I have this new modern truck, compared to my old 96 Tacoma, so maybe I have gotten spoiled. But I feel that this head unit on the Tacomas, should be upgradable and programmable so people can add what they want to it and get RID of things they do NOT want too. Enough of my rant for now....
