I tried to search, but got mounds of other threads and lost. So quick question, can you just buy the head unit out of a salvage truck and swap? What else is involved if not?

I put an entune from a 2017 into my 2015. Works fine, and all the hook up wires was there. I had to use the Vin number from the 2017 to sign in. Not a perfect fit for second gen truck, but u should be fine with your 3rd gen

what does entune offer? I thought it was lacking support from Toyota and others. So far, it's a wasted "feature" on my 2021

Depends on the model or options... SR5 have link based GPS (Scout GPS Link).... TRD models have Navigation based head unit. Unless Toyota changed the head unit in 2018 models or so. I used to have '17 SR5.. I linked GPS from my phone... I traded it in for '17 TRD Sport which it has navigation head unit... I wish I wait til 2020 or so to get a truck with carplay head unit. But I am considering to swap the head unit with carplay someday... I don't know. Or I may get an aftermarket head unit..

entune 3.0 modals you had to pay extra for GPS or use android auto/apple car play. On entune 2.0 (2016-2019) it had built in GPS that you only had to buy updated map cards for every once in a while.

Between the 2 version of the radio on the 2016-2019 there was the premium and the standard. Premium came with a bigger screen and had better functionality.

You can swap in any entune 2.0 headunit from a tacoma 2016-2019 and it will be plug and play. But you will need to buy the matching radio bezel. The screen is bigger on the entune premium than the standard radio, so the bezel wont fit.

Thanks for the explanation. The unit in the 2021 accepts all sorts of blue tooth for audio and hands free phone etc. and with a cord, the phone nave app turns right on and displays on the dash panel.

I would see the entune option an improvement over legacy options, but the Toyota GPS and maps thing is not something I want or need. I do use a Garmin GPS unit to cover the phone for lost cell service.
