Hello. I have a 2015 DCLB TRD Sport 4x4 with 28,000 miles on her right now. I love this truck.
My question, is their any members who had a 2015 and upgraded to a 2017? Was it a good decision or or you sorry you didn't keep the 2015?

I'm looking to upgrade because I like the new tech package. I really like the sunroof, the new 6 speed transmission, higher horse power and locking differential. I know there was a problem with the trans when it first came out. Do you guys notice a difference in the horse power? I want to start to build my truck out but i'm going back and forth with doing it to my 2015 or should I get the 2017 and build it. I have read where there are a lot of 2016 & 2017 being traded in for other trucks.

The only real complaint I have with my 2015 is when you step on the gas there's a moment of lag time before it shifts and gets going.

Just interested in your own personal experience.
    Thanks a bunch.

Make sure you get an overnight test drive to see if you like it or not.

I don't know what the 2015 is like. But I love my 2017. Personally, if I had a 2015 with 28K miles I'd probably just keep it as it seems it's not used much and I like to use up my vehicles.

There have been numerous threads along this same vein. At the end of the day, it's all about you. I agree with Shakerhood, just make sure you take a nice long test-drive and get a good feel for the engine/transmission to see if it suits your needs and driving style.

Once the OP has a test drive it will help for comparing the 2.

The long test drive is a great idea. I didn't think of that. Thanks shakerhood and backtrack2015.

The only thing good about 2nd gens is low rpm throttle response. They are inferior in every other way.

In addition to the better low end torque, the 2nd gens also have a lower hood line and a driver's side grab handle... lol

I've owned both and consider this another vote for 3rd gen here.

I struggled with this decision myself. I really considered trading when the 2016 came out and ultimately just waited. I think it was a good idea to give it a year with all the bad press the 2016 received due to the transmissions issues. My 2007 was running great and I've driven it forever so it was hard to part with it, especially being paid off, but I ended up with a deal I couldn't pass up so I traded it last week for a 2017 and I have zero regrets. I seriously had even considered shopping for a 2014-2015 with low miles but I really wanted a change and sticking with a newer model 2nd Gen just didn't feel like enough of an upgrade.

I stressed out so much after reading this site trying to determine if I should trade my beloved 2012 in for a 2017. OMG I'm glad I did, I've never looked back. I've never traded a vehicle in and felt like I was ripping the dealer off.

Wow an 80's interior. That's a new one.

Aside from the that, the suspension, the frame, the cab size...among other things are all derived from a 2nd gen. So I don't get your point. Don't get me wrong I like the 3rd gens and they have done some much needed updating. But let's not forget how much these 3rd gens have 2nd gen in them.

I disagree about the 2nd gen having a 1980's interior but I do see where mrkabc is going with his comment... It is outdated to say the least and sometimes quite boring but I didn't buy my 2nd gen based on styling or up to date features. I would gladly purchase a 3rd gen even though I love my 2nd gen.

I like the interior updates a lot and thats really what swayed me to the 3rd Gen. I've been in my 2nd Gen for 6 years and I'm enjoying the change in scenery. The fit & finish is far superior to what was on the 2nd gen. I didn't opt for any high end electronics because I just rip it all out and install aftermarket anyways but the base stereo is light years ahead of what they used to be. The 6x9s in the front can actually put out some respectable bass for stock. Sucks that I have to buy a completely new shell. I had a SnugTop XTR on my 07 and it would have been awesome to just slide it over to the new truck.

It sucks when you buy a truck and there is a new design out the next year. It really dates your vehicle quickly. That aside... imo there is no comparison the 3rd gen is superior in every way... if you can afford to upgrade ... go for it.

I just traded my 2015 trd off road with 33000 for a 2017 off road and I love it so far! It feels different but in a good way? Mine also came with a 3 inch lift and bigger tires... the interior difference is like day n night... but that's just up to what you like

Frame, control arms, rear axle, are much stronger on 3rd gens. It's more comfortable inside, feels slightly wider. Don't get me wrong, I owned a 2nd gen for a long time and love them.

I had the option of getting a 3rd gen or 2nd. I opted for 2nd. Better low end powerband, better resale, consumer reports(?), aftermarket options. I Like the 3rd gens interior though and the fact it sits a bit higher. Matter of preference tbh. I personally don't feel like I'm missing out on much besides interior and tech options
