    Hey so first post here

    I have a 2014 trd sport
I got it because it was a good deal and it was certified used
About a month after I realized I would have rather just paid the extra money for a new car that I built up
This is my first car and I want it to be my baby
So my question is do you think it's worth it to just modify my current 2014 sport
Or should I get the new 2017 offroad go from there
I'll probably be paying around 10k to do so
So does it make sense to that or to just modify my current truck. Thanks in advance!

Upgrading would be a terrible decision. There's no reason to pay that kind of money when you have a perfectly good, proven truck with almost the same capability. Take that money and get yourself tires, lockers, and suspension and you'll blow any 2017 TRD off road out of the water. Or better yet start a Roth IRA nobody should be modding cars unless they have one of those already or are rich.

Ok I just wanted to know if it would be cheaper to modify my current truck rather then upgrade to a newer one.

I would hold on to the 2014...especially if your just starting out. It will last forever, and you can get a supercharger eventually. Don't give in too early in life to wanting to upgrade a car or truck for something 'nicer' or 'better'...save that for your 40s or 50s during midlife crisis time once you have more money saved that the depreciation on a vehicle doesn't really matter :).

Dont get me wrong, the 3rd gen is nicer and more Japanese looking just like the 5.5 gen 4runners (if you appreciate the revised appearance) , but I looked closely at the suspension and its still pretty much the same damn suspension! The gen2 is slightly faster to 60 mph. The mileage isn't significantly that much better in a gen 3. And the gen 3 rear bumper has been reduced to just multiple layers of plastic formed pieces for production cost savings (not replacement savings) instead of a the one piece metal bumper.

I would definitely keep what you have. The 2014 is a great truck, and that $10K would go a long way towards a lift, tires, lockers, and armor.

You wouldnt have to spend 10k to match an offroad. You can get a rear locker for relatively cheap, compared to 10k. The sport has a simplified version of ATRAC. Its not quite as hardcore, but it works. By pushing the traction button once you turn on the 'auto lsd' which applies brakes to the tire that slips and sends power to the tire with traction. Do this while in 4wd and it does the same thing, except your in 4wd. With simple mods from this site you can use it in 4 low. Dont worry about the horse power difference of the newer truck. The 2nd gen has the same torque and has better low end power for towing.

keep the 14. if you bought a 17 TRD PRO you would end up modifying it anyway so whats the point.

I disagree the rear bumper was designed so if you crunched one side while wheeling you can easily replace the panel instead of the whole thing. bumpers now days are designed for light impact and they are meant to crunch. I would rather replace a panel then the whole damn thing

the 3rd gen has better towing capability. I would not say that the 2nd gen has better low end power for towing. I do prefer the 2nd gen over the 3rd gen though and agree with everything else you said!

Have you driven a 3rd gen yet? The 2nd gen definitely has better low end. It doesnt have to gear hunt as much as the 3rd gen while towing. The 3rd gen makes its power in the higher rpms. Higher tow specs dont just come from better power, comes from the overall truck ability. Brakes and such.

The gear hunting issue has already been fixed. and the 3rd gen just flat out tows more then the 2nd gen does it tow a lot more? NO but it does tow 400 pounds more. the 3rd gen will tow better then a 2nd gen.
