I have seen several threads about upgrading the door speakers in a 2003 crew cab but I cant seem to find a straight answer for what Im looking for. Soooo please tell me, what are the size speakers front and rear doors that I can install with no modification or very limited mods. Do the fronts need to be the 'slim' models? Would love 3-way but 2-way will suffice. Also any suggestions to brand and model numbers would be appreciated. Thanks

I have a 2002 double cab do not sure what your speaker size in the back but 5x7 speakers worked for me in all four doors. Just regular 5x7 speakers and they fit no problem at all.

5x7 are factory and a 6x8 will bolt up as well. I went through Rockford fosgate and alpine 6x8’s before I finally bit the bullet and bought focal polyglass V2 6.5” slim line component speakers. I have had the 6.5” focals since like 2008/9 and they are still going strong w/100 watts to each.

As said above, go to crutchfield.com, and enter your vehicle specs. It will tell you what speakers will fit.

IIRC, there is no need for a "slim" model speaker or anything. It's a pretty conventional speaker location so nothing special.

I installed 5-1/4’s up front and 5x7’s in the rear. As stated above Crutchfield will show what fits. My 5-1/4’s needed a schosche “adapter” for it to fit the 5x7 holes. If you want 6.5’s you can make it work with a set of speaker enclosures that look like the kick plates by your feet. Like so

You can make just about anything work. There is a YouTube channel where a guy customizes his 1st gen speaker doors to fit bigger speakers. I’ve seen one use fiberglass and another make it out of wood

I will say this, I went with Focal 5&1/4’s for up front, the tweeters they came with, the Focal crossovers, Two Focal 5x7’s for the ext cab and a 10” Focal sub with two Alpine amps and my system sounds amazing! Replacing the stock radio makes a world of difference also. I take my music pretty serious so I took out the seats/rugs and plastic side panels, wiped it all down with alcohol and put some Frost King down to soundproof the cab of the truck. Cost me about $100 between the Frost King, a couple bottles of spray glue and the alcohol. It really enhances the sound of the music not to mention significantly minimizes the road noise.

I have 6.5s in the doors. You have to trim away all of the plastic behind the grill on the door panel. You also have to space out the speaker from the mount quite a bit to have the magnet clear the window track. Basically move the speaker toward the door panel as much as possible. My passenger door panel still requires some force to get it pop into place.

I replaced the factory tweeters on my 2001 Xtra cab with some regular Alpine tweeters. They fit right in and sound great!

I put them in the same spots as the old ones. They even fit under the old panel covers. You obviously can't use the Alpine grill/front this way, but it looks much cleaner.

Does anyone know the max depth of the door speaker can be in a 1998 Ext Cab. I have gone on crutchfield and most of the speakers that fit are a max of about 2 1/8" depth. Was wondering if someone had brand/model numbers of what they have fit in the door. I know I will have to do some trimming to get the speaker mounted outward on the panel. I have never had the panels off so I do not know how much I will gain with trimming. I have a set of Old School Nakamichi 6.5" separates that sound awesome. Thanks
