So, it seems that most upgrades to tires and lifts come with dumping stock wheels. I'm looking to change out the stock tires and possibly suspension on my 2016 SR5 for snow/ice and occasional (once a month or so) off-road but I don't really have any hate for my grey alloy wheels. I'd love to hear from those who have upgraded their 3rd gens to more capable/larger tires, done lifts, armor, etc. but chose to keep the stock (non-pro) wheels. Pictures appreciated. I searched for an existing thread but couldn't find one for third gens.

2 things to keep in mind. stock wheels are 7" width which can limit you on tire sizes. also keep in mind a lot of beefy looking tires are no better and sometimes worse in snow than the tires that came with your vehicle

Yes, I realize that we are not talking about 35 inch tires on a substantial lift, or even small tires on a substantial lift as that would sort of defeat the purpose. You could stick with stock width in a more aggressive tire, or move to 255s (available in some brands) or perhaps as high as 265s.

My personal plan is to stick with 245/75s or perhaps 255s (available on some tires) and the only "lift" is what I will get with a suspension upgrade if I end up doing one. No bro-card for me. My SR5 came with straight up passenger all season tires. I don't put a lot of commuting miles on the truck (between 5000-8000 miles a year total) and it is our go-to vehicle for NC ice storms or winter trips to the mountains.

    I didn't do a full lift, just a 3/2 leveling kit, but I kept the OEM wheel with a 285/75/16 BFG KO2

Not true, you can fit 35/12.5 and so on with a 7" rim. Many offroaders use smaller rims.

im not buying that for a second. i understand small diameter wheel for more sidewall but if you air'd down a 35 on a 7" wide wheel i guarantee the bead is being unseated. im not ever sure you could get most 35" tires mounted on a 7" wide rim but it would depend on the tire

Oh really cuz my friends run 35/12.5 on stock Jeep rims at 15x7..You should try google.

Yep they are tough to mount for sure.

My 88 YJ is running 33/12.5s on 8" rims.

not sure what google you use but i got links to about 30 forums saying even 285 is pushing it especially if you offroad and ever need to air down. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f15/help-35in-tires-16x7-rims-842243/

Are you using any spacers on that setup? And do you have any rubbing?

maybe someone like dustin @fnwheels can comment. ive only mounted about 100 or so sets in my lifetime but once was a freebie tire that was too wide but my sports car ate tires so i mounted it. was interesting feeling when that lost a bead mid turn in. and that was at full psi

I like this approach, as I want to increase my ground clearance without putting super wide tires on. This should also help with reducing unspun weight with the more narrow setup. I have the OR wheels as well and think they look OK. They don't look awesome, but they don't look like crap either.

Yes, I have seen them on stock Jeep rims, and those are 15. Look kind of cool.

Everyone will have their opinion for sure. That said my friends and I wheel in our rigs so thats my only experience, maybe they suck DDing but they still work fine.

wish i had a camera that worked on my work computer. checked 6 tires brand guides. every one listed minimum rim width of 7.5" on a 285 width tire. do what you want and believe who you may but they people who make the wheels and tires would not recommend it. id imagine there is a reason when FN cloned the pro wheels they altered the width. i bet is isnt because metal was on sale and they just wanted to add more

    Yup they will...so what?

Stock tires on my truck are 265/70/16. Most people after lifting their truck go to 285/75/16 which is less than 1" wider..Less than an inch is not going to affect anything, except maybe some rubbing. There are lots of people with lifted tacomas on stock rims. I will be keeping my stock rims once lifted as well.

At the end of the day the OP won't need new rims for his new tires.

no but it is something to consider. simply why i brought it up. most aftermarket wheels are 8"+ width for a reason and i know it isnt because they felt like it. i never said it was impossible because i know it can be done. is it a safe recommendation that will work great for everyone? no. which is why every link you posted started out exactly like: "i know it isnt recommended and generally a bad idea but..."

edit: with 2/3 links reporting problems with giant tires and 7" width wheels

ok...you said his 7" rim would limit his tire size. It really doesn't. Think about this logically, is the OP planning on doing a 6" lift or LT Suspension that would allow him to fit a 35/12.5 tire? We don't know right. So we can assume hes going to go with what most people do. The 285 range or a 33/11.5.. If people can safely drive and wheel on a 7" rim with a 12.5 tire then I'm pretty sure hes going to be ok on an 11" tire. We have TW people running stock rims on 285 tires as well with no issues.

They also say this "Yeah - I have ~ 80 K miles on 33x12.5's on 7" rims...no abnormal wear, no blown bead problems, no problems what so ever."

The only time you will see a 12.5 tire lose a bead on 7" rim is if you aired down to like 5-10psi. Since so many tacomas are rock crawling (sarcasm)...at that point install a beadlock.

Have you ever heard the term "poor mans beadlock?"

your idea of safe differs from others. id consider safe staying within the limits of the manufacturers recommendations. but then again i sell parts for a living. so i recommend whats recommended by people who engineer the stuff. i dont have any fancy degrees so ill let them do that work. now for my personal vehicle, yeah i bootleg a lot of shit. but i know what to do when im trying to climb an obstacle and something comes apart. not everyone does. so i would NOT recommend going over a 285 width wire on a 7" wide rim. if you know you can and can handle the potential consequences, go for it. but if you need to go to TW to see if you can go up a size tire, i would not recommend it

too true. but each their own. i just dont want to be the one passing along "potentially dangerous info" and i put that in quotes just for you joe incase OP ends up putting 35's on his stock wheels and ends up on his roof
