That seems like a lot ... I recently added $3000 of coverage for my camper shell and it raised my rates by $17/6 months.

Maybe shop around/get some new quotes?

Oh yeah, it might be pricey until you're 25. I made the mistake of buying a new Civic Si when I was 24 and for a few months the insurance was more than the car payment. I liked State Farm (local service from your agent), Allstate has terrible customer service, and Geico and Progressive are very easy to update and adjust on your own on the website. I liked Ameriprise when it was affiliated with Costco but had bad experiences with American Family after they bought Ameriprise. Like they were hitting me with mileage surcharges on a 10 year old car (a Yaris, our commuter car), saying we drove it 19,000 miles a year. I sent in pictures of the odometer showing it has like 55,000 miles on it, not 190,000 as they were calculating and they would just listen to logic.

I'm in my mid 40s and have done stints with State Farm, Allstate, Amerprise/American Family, Geico and now Progressive. I have no loyalty to any of them and just cancel if they hit me with a big rate increase for no reason. Most recently Geico raised my rates $200 per year even though we're barely driving and haven't had any claims or tickets in like 5 years (last one was a claim to replace the windshield) They offered to lower it by $150 a year when I called to cancel. Nope, still canceling but I probably would have stayed if they'd just increased it by $50.

Progressive was the cheapest for me this time. If I were driving more I would probably get a company that is known for better customer service like Amica or something but they were about $300 more/6 months than Progressive so I just set a low deductible and decided to risk it.

let us know how that Progressive Insurance works out, when they want to cut the shops estimate in half, only utilizing used, or aftermarket parts, to fix your vehicles. progressive, gieco, liberty mutual, allstate, state farm all have great marketing depts but, they hammer the shops to utilize non oem parts for repairs. your results, may vary. My wife's Prius had to have a windshield replaced. While Progressive initially wanted to send her to Safelite, they ended up approving OEM glass done by a shop I chose. The shop just told them that Toyota would not calibrate the TSS features on aftermarket glass and it wasn't an issue (the shop was sending her car to the dealer for recalibration after installing the glass).

I tried several of the top-listed companies on Consumer Reports and they don't sell in Texas. I don't qualify for USAA so basically just rotate between the big dogs every few years.

    What company do you recommend?

When we got hit by hail they covered my RTT under our homeowners policy. We also lost our roof, 3 skylights, 5 windows and a bunch of other stuff so I dont think they were too worried about the RTT. Thanks for the reminder though, I've been meaning to reach out to them about some of the newer upgrades!

This is very important! Make sure you read everything. I have seen this happen. It was stated in the policy but he never read it because he "Thought he was covered". I'll use paint as an example. If you custom paint your truck and its 10 grand, you call insurance to add coverage for the paint. They charge you a premium. You have an accident and then find out that the insurance you bought pays to have your truck re-painted to the same custom paint, but if the truck is totaled (therefore not getting repainted) you get NOTHING. Make sure you know what you're paying for.

Help me through that in relation to a $3000 camper shell if I have paid for extra coverage for a $3000 camper shell.

Like if someone rear ends me, pushes me into a car in front of me, sets off all the airbags and bends the frame (and breaks the camper shell), totaling the truck, I wouldn't get $3k for the camper shell? Wouldn't my insurance go after the other person's insurance for the shortfall?

When would/would it not be covered? If the truck is stolen/not recovered? If it catches on fire and burns up?

Every policy is different. Read the rider for the additional equipment coverage carefully. If you still have any doubts contact your agent/company and ask them your questions. We can give you answers here and they may not be relevant to your particular policy.

Thanks, will do, wasn't sure if it was standard fare or different from carrier to carrier. I'll check it out because I hate surprises!!
