The problem is that reverse isn't geared low enough, neither is 1st. This is a common problem with any modern truck with manual transmissions. I've had to resort to low range with multiple trucks and SUV's over the years when backing up inclines. As long as you're only in 4X4 for short distances and don't turn the wheels more than a slight amount you'll be OK. Doing what you've been doing is the best answer.

A manual can be fun to drive. But on a tow vehicle they suck. An automatic is much easier to get loads moving in either direction.

Right, 1st Gear feels fine but Reverse is a bit of a head scratcher in this truck, it feels like a highway gear.

I've never had a problem. But then, the only time I've shoved a load backwards is on a boat ramp (down hill) or my driveway (flat).

Ya, modern vehicles. There are times I really miss my 65 Chevy and 62 Ford. I could put it in first and just crank on the starter, no clutch needed, it would just start driving.

I think you meant ‘masochist’ in the general sense of the word for your comment!

I thought OVTune adjusted shift points and raised the Redline. Don’t think it adds any power or torque down low.

Have not put 1st to the test yet, I'll see how it does at the boat launch but I'm generally in 4wd anyway because of the mud.

I believe it does add more power lower in Revs, hadn't read much on the automatic tune but imagine he changed shift points also.
