just recently got a '16 tacoma, was looking to get something with CRAWL control and those upgraded features, unfortunately my version did not come with any of them. It's not to late to take it back. So, would it be easier to turn it back in and get the specs I'm looking for or just go through the process of installing these features myself or can I go off roading with my 4x4, HAC, and other standard features installed?

Trade it back those are hard to install. But better question why do you feel you need crawl control? I feel it's mostly a gimmick and not something very useful or at least not something I can ever see being necessary.

    Welcome to TW.
You can go Off roading with a 2wd and a winch and a buddy if you want to.
For most folks 4wd is enough. If you read on here you will find a lot of guys with crawl control just use it to see what it does and when they hear the noises it makes they stop using it.
What truck do you currently have?

Yep 4wd is plenty for most "off roading"....throw in a rear locker and you're covered in 99% of any and all scenarios. Honestly cannot think of any scenario in which crawl control is an absolute requirement.

    More electronic gee wizardry.

If you are that kind of guy, a trade in is in order.

If you have actual off road experience, and don't intend to use the truck in some niche environment where 'crawl control' might be of use, you're fine.

It's much more important to know how to evaluate conditions, how to drive (or avoid) those conditions, and how to recover when things go awry.

All of those take experience, not better 4 wheeling through technology.

(You'll find many folks around here would just prefer manual everything. Self reliance is good sometimes, and simple still is usually better)

People have offroaded all over the world without crawl control for years....its not worth losing a bunch of money just to get that.

    You are fine with 4wd.

    I wanted to buy it

thank you, I don't mind not having it, but reading reviews knowing my skill with cars and other factors, figured it would have been easier to get a truck with all those things installed.

Crawl control is not worth it. I would never pay for it (I actually have it). Enjoy your beautiful truck. It is plenty capable, and you have less computers to break on you later.

It's not a necessity but it works. I wouldn't trade in a SR5 to upgrade just to get it. Better save your money and get front/rear locker instead.

crawl control, some call it a gimmick but that can still do a lot for some who need the automation that covers up a lack of skill & wisdom. but i agree it's not worth installing after purchase.

if you want to maximize your off-road ability: good tires > crawl control, so put your money in tires or something that gives back right away.

I'll echo the sentiments of everyone in this thread. In order of importance:

4x4, tires, locker, maxtrax, winch, etc , etc, crawl control.

If you have 4x4 the absolute best enhancement you can make is the tires. The next is a rear locker. Crawl control is next to last.

It's really designed to only be used when you are stuck and need the truck to get you out of a bad situation.

I will likely never need it, but it's nice knowing it is there if something happens where I need assistance getting unstuck.

I think you are thinking of MTS, MTS is bad ass, I used it 3 times in Moab in deep loose sand/rock, it ACTUALLY works wonders. Crawl control, take it or leave it, I don't care much about it and I love propelling myself but I love MTS -

Damn, all you guys have given a lot of great info, definitely just keeping my truck then, and slowly start working on upgrades.
