You are gonna get a lot of different replies suggestions. I just did this upgrade 2 weeks ago. Anything better than stock!!!! I also had non JBL. I went with alpine type R speakers and components and a 5 channel Arc Audio amp. Sounds 100 time cleaner/ Crisper! I really dont need a sub i have good clean mind bass. Yet- I went with a 5 channel amp just incase i want to add. I might even get the 3 in 1 subs that come pre built for the taco with a amp. Both JL and alpine offer these in 8-10 inch subs. I'm also running a stk head unit. Again any higher end speaker is going to sound better than stock.

For what it's worth, I understand that Toyota uses some of the noisier head units in the industry.

Are you saying that JUST adding an amp to the factory system is making a huge difference? Just want to clarify, not questioning you. I went on a road trip and my girl literally turned the stock volume to MAX and it still wasn't incredibly loud on the highway.

+1. Stock head units are what - maybe 10 watts RMS/channel? And not all that clean.

I have a stock entune nav unit upgraded speakers with Cerwin-vega V465C component in front and V465 in back Sensitivity: 94dB they sound great I have to really turn up the volume to make them sing but at 400 watt handling I can add a amp someday.
