I'll be different, stretch budget to $600 and put these in the front doors.
    https://www.crutchfield.com/S-EnUIX10QtIA/p_898GS690/Audiofrog-GS690.html

    Subaru tweeters
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PV6F8I2?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    Add this amp/dsp
    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_206KEY1804/Kicker-KEY180-4.html

This will be really hard to beat at that pricepoint. Those Audiofrog 6x9 are excellent midrange monsters!

I run a full active front with an Alpine PDX-v9, JL Audio Twk 88 with subaru tweeters , Audison 6.5" and a 10" Sundown Audio sub. Doors are completely done in Noico 80mil. Very clean sounding system. I tried the cheaper Kicker upgrade solution....it just wasn't for me.

Not to hijack the thread but I have a 2018 SR DCSB. Would it be the same to upgrade with my truck? specifically, that Subaru tweeters + kicker $250 upgrade route.

Not true. As some have mentioned on other threads, the SR head unit doesn't have the same power output. So they don't get the same results. Not sure what the remedy is. I'm guessing an amp. But I'm not sure.

Yeah I think I read that somewhere. I wonder if I could just use CrutchFields Outfit My Car? Would a different head unit likely have suitable power output? I think android auto would be worth the head unit upgrade anyways.

Not sure. I haven't researched as the OR head unit is actually pretty good (except navigation, voice control). Plus it provides vehicle changes like lights and door lock options I just don't want to mess around with. Good luck with what you decide!

I wouldn't replace the head unit... really expensive (beyond your budget) to do so without losing much functionality you have today. Start w/ the speaker upgrade mentioned above (kickers sound terrific) and then see how you like it as-is and you can easily add an amp should you want.

Kicker and crutchfield giving you royalties yet? I was thinking about how much in sales you given them the other day, lol. I'm super happy I stumbled across that thread. Made me go from hating the stereo to loving it.

Ha! yeah, in hindsight I should've struck a deal w/ them but hey I'm just glad that hundreds of people at this point have killed those paperweight speakers in the truck. I'm just glad Toyota did give most of us a decent head unit to power better speakers!

I would suggest just adding an amp with the new speakers, just make sure the amp can handle speaker level outputs. It will involve some additional wiring but not too bad.

I just ordered the two sets of Kickers from Crutchfield ($135 shipped!) and the Subaru Kicker tweeters from Amazon ($97 shipped). Looking forward to getting these installed! I hope the door panels aren't too much of a PITA to deal with.

Your only regret is going to be not doing it sooner.

    A few minor things...
I just did the kicker speaker upgrade. Next is sound deadening and an amp.

The speaker upgrade is OK for what it is, but the stock speakers are 4 ohm 20w each, the new ones are 4 ohm 100w/150w each and you can tell the head unit is doing all it can to drive them. Having some more juice when you need it will help. I'm probably going to go with a 600w 4ch amp. Don't know what type yet. I'm going to make my own bracket to mount it under the drivers seat. I'll do all this when I have the dash apart to wire in my relay box, front cam, and so much other stuff.

Anyone install those focals yet? I'm curious if you lose some of the mid / low range

It said on Crutchfield that the Focals weren't compatible with the OR.

It is not hard at all, worst part is the noise it makes as you remove them, sounds like you are breaking things.

I've heard them in person and I would pass unless your going to run an amp, they need power. They sounds great with some power though, but they're spendy.

Crutchfield also said the JL C2s I just bought wouldnt fit and they were easier to install than the Kickers.

That's why I said call. I know they fit. Call them. They don't update their site as often as you think....
