Upgrading stock OR suspension

    Hello looking to upgrade my suspension not really into a 2-3” lift I do use my truck daily and mostly city driving. I currently have stock Bilstein from a 2021 TRD OR. Upgrading to stock trd pro (fox) suspension worth it? Any recommendations will be gladly appreciated thanks!

    The trd pro suspension IS an upgrade but it also really depends on what you expect out of it. When you say you want an “upgrade”, what are you looking for exactly? Ride quality, load capacity, sportier handling? Focusing on any of those will mean making a compromise in the other two. Budget is also a factor, of course.

    The big win when I upgraded was moving up to 600 lb springs. Stock the truck wallowed in the turns.

    Shocks are not the suspension. They are just shocks. Springs are the suspension, shocks control the springs.

    2021 TRD Offroad DCSB Cement 4x4 AT
    Get the bilstein 6112/5160 combo and a 1.5 AAL. I have my truck lifted 1.5 all around and it rides way better than the stock off-road suspension. Definitely worth the upgrade. I daily drive mine also and didn’t want too much of a lift.

    Leave it as is. I dont see the point if your doing mostly city driving. The suspension it has will be just fine if you ever go offroad.

    I put pro suspension on my 18 & it’s a night & day difference over stock offroad setup. Some of the best money I’ve spent.

    I'm another person that installed 6112s.

    But I came from the Sport hitachis, not the OR suspension. Ride quality is a very loaded question. Suspension is a complicated system, and every brand/model/combination has a different characteristic that they are prioritizing.

    The 6112/5150s are essentially the Sport suspension on steroids. They are a digressive shock: the harder the bump, the more pliant they get. In the real world that means they are stiff as hell around town and have a feel very similar to a sports car. They plant themselves on the straights and stiffen up in the corners. Off road, however, they loosen a little. They smooth out washboard and aren't as harsh on big impacts.

    The big attraction to 6112s in particular is their supernatural rebound. They keep wheels on the ground no matter what. Your truck feels planted. Big whoops, drops, potholes, curb crawling at the mall, doesn't matter. They take the impact and then immediately plant the wheel back down to terra firma.

    The big flaw of the 6112/5160 (and every shock compromises somewhere) is that they suck on small, singular potholes. On slow or shallow stuff, they are stiff. You'll feel road seams and wonder if they are working. They take some getting used to.


    So... For a fellow who is used to the stock OR, they aren't that. I and many others like them. But if you are wanting more of a linear shock (I want to say the stock OR billies are a very primitive, basic entry into the progressive/linear side of suspension), you might want to look elsewhere.

    less front to rear shifting when braking, less body roll in turns are both noticeable.

    the biggest improvement for me is hitting large bumps/uneven pavement at higher speeds. Truck recovers so much faster instead of bouncing around and staying unsettled.

    I will say slow speed potholes <15-20 mph aren’t quite as “plush” as the stock offroad setup.

    Just get the Fox shocks and springs that are used by the "Pro" or the equivalent and maybe save some beer money? Just me thinking out loud...
