It's not just Toyota. We had a 2011 Odyssey EXL with a really good backup up camera. When we upgraded to a 2014 Odyssey Elite, it had a much worse resolution to the point that I thought the protective plastic was still on the lens.

You will loose some things, but gain many other things. But, I fear that there may be a "camera computer" behind the dash that does all the processing. So you would still be limited to what the cameras computer gives you. I think someone needs to really dig into the OEM camera system and test things out to be sure of what is going on with the signal.

Did anyone ever look into this? (Sorry for necro, just trying to figure out if anyone did these swaps).

'21 Pro camera looked like it still had protective film on it, not asking for the HD camera that my BMW has, but even the StdDef that is on my wife's Outback is 10,000% better/clearer.

Had a '17 Tacoma and the quality wasn't great, but was clear enough on the head unit. Just picked up a new '21 with the new aerial camera. The quality on the '17 was much better. The '21 seems like a downgrade, blurry, more grain, and wider.

Would like to upgrade and hope an aftermarket option come out soon. Seems to be a market for this.

Anyone have pics of the older camera screen compared to the newer camera screen? When I test drove a 2021 2 weeks ago I noticed the quality is below average but not a deal breaker... I would like to possibly upgrade them if it bothers me that much after a while.

Bump. Has anyone found an upgrade for the back up camera?
I got a new head unit with a higher resolution, so the resolution from the oem camera is terrible.

I too would love a upgrade. Here in the PNW it gets dark early during the fall winter months . Yes I used the turn lights off trick helped but not much . Brighter backup bulbs helped not much. Tailgate light bar from opt-7 helped tremendously. Upgraded my head unit helped a lot. In the end doing all these crutches to have better clarity in the video helped enough to where I'm ok with it . But if it can be better I would enjoy that more. Like I tell my kids better to be safe than sorry .

Pre 20 cameras had different field of view so different lens. Post 20 cameras are designed to work with the panorama computer. I suspect of you change anything even 1 degree off, it'll mess up the panorama.

Alternative would be to installed a separate camera and screen.

I don't understand why people are bitching and complaining about the back up camera. I think it works fine to me it is nice and clear and have no problems backing up with it at night. Camera is better than no camera. Just saying.

Everything, except the ones I haven't done yet ;)
My coworker's 2021 Toyota Venza has the Panoramic Multi View Monitor with the rear camera view in the rear view mirror with the 360 overlook on the main screen and it's resolution is incredibly clear, unlike my 2020 TRD OR potato-vision. Ugh!

If PMVM is going to be norm, I wonder if it's as simple as upgrading the head units that's coming in these newer models?

The back up camera on my 2014 Venza was about the same as my new 2021 TRD Sport. Not much difference other than the height of the camera.

When you upgrade your head unit to a high res screen and the rear camera stretches out to become shit, you'll understand.

the problem with that thought process is that the Tacoma rivals the price of a MB now, so maybe they should step it up a bit.

You gotta do the mod that turns the license plate light off when you’re in reverse to stop the glare. It’s next on my list

I don’t understand why people even comment on this post if they’re aren’t adding anything to the conversation. Isn’t this forum asking how to do something or it’s possible? Not “it’s good enough so shut up”

I agree with op the camera is shit. I installed an After market head unit (Pioneer WT7600) and the quality of the camera blows. My friend and the TRD pro and his camera isn’t set in the housing properly so it has the plastic housing in the image.

I bought two Natika camera’s off Amazon
    NATIKA Backup/Front View...

    I’ll post how it goes

I mean if your going to replace the headunit and the camera and all the wiring to it, then you can put 4k in if you really wanted to.

I think the “it’s good enough so shut up” is more inline with people say that the camera displays a image of what behind you so you dont run over the dog. Remember, your not reading the newspaper through the backup camera. Also how long do you drive in reverse that HD quality is even a issue? My truck spends about 5-10 seconds in reverse...
