upper ball joint replacement help

My truck is a 2005 dcsb trd sport 4x4 with 123k miles.
I went in for an alignment today, couldnt get it done do to a broken upper ball joint. Are there any how to threads or anything anybody can show me a link for. I searched and couldnt find a how to thread.
I was told i would need to rent special tools from the auto parts store can anybody let me know what those are.
How hard is it to replace?
Any all help is appreciated, i sure as hell cant afford to pay repair shop prices.

 

Do you live in ca? I don't know if there are any threads but I think it should be easy. I've replaced some ball joints back at the shop I use to work at. Do you have an air compressor, air hammer, and the tools with it? And the tool you need is called a ball joint press tool thingy. With the right tool shouldn't be long. Expensive part be only to buy the ball joints.

The link i posted goes over replacement of the ball joint its self, but i need instructions on removing everything related to the job such as do the coils need removed etc....

 

The spring/shock assembly will have to be removed to get the tension off of the ball joint. You'll need to get the proper tool from a autoparts store to remove the ball joint (it's pressed in the upper control arm) and you'll need to press in the new one.

 

Oh that's ok I was just gonna offer myself to help. Yeah to remove it is just the reversed process of that. The way he installed it just flip the press around to where it is pushing the ball joint out, of if you or your friend have an air hammer, use that sob to on it. Plus I like the thread, I just don't like the thing about having to heat it up, as I've read some people say it bad because it could weaken the part.

I'd say either use an impact wrench to seat it or use a lead hammer to hit the thing every time the turning gets hard. That's what I was taught at the shop when I worked there.

 

I know you probably have it out by now, but there is a circlip or split ring that has to come off first on 2nd gens. Even then it was tough. I was reusing my UBJ with the camburg UCAs. Anyone thinking of using these, either buy the UCA with bj installed, or just cut the heck out of the factory upper control arms after you take them off to get the ball joint out. Its all about saving the boot. It was a beyotch.

 

Are the upper's the same as the bottoms??? I'm looking at having to change one on my 05 Sport, and wondering if I need any special tools for this....????

 

So you need to change uppers?

If so, are you planning on lifting any time soon? Might wanna get new upper control arms with the ball joints already installed (light racing or Camburg). It will require an alignment. Not trying to spend all your money, but two birds with one stone sort of deal. About 500 bucks with your labor (plus alignment).

Might take about 2 hrs to change UCAs, and that includes putting tools away and washing your hands.

Raybestos makes a pro grade (their term) UBJ which is part #500-1150. The good ones at NAPA are made by Raybestos also.

 

Do you have the part number for a Raybestos pro grade LBJ also?

 

Not if you jack up the vehicle from the lower control arm. The shock doesn't have to be touched.

 

also you may as well find some lightly used stock UCA's..... i got a pair with all of 9k miles on them in my garage after i put on my SPC arms.

 

you can also buy a new control arm with the ball joint in it, they cost less than 100 bucks
