    Hi all

So a buddy of mine picked up a 2019 TRD offroad (not pro, editing to fix) - put on some really nice wheels, I bought his takeoffs and they look fantastic. Really happy to replace my super chrome TRD sport 17"s, stacked in the back there. Even though he got a top of the line Tacoma - passenger rated tires on the new wheels. Not even truck tires! Amazing. This is fine by me, my old tires were about shot anyways so I'm due for new tires.

Planning on going from the stock 265/70 to 285/75s. I'm planning on doing the cab chop, but anything else I should take into consideration for making that adjustment? The current "lift" is just bilstein 5100s in the front, 2" level block in the rear. Because my truck is an 09 I went through the whole got my fourth leaf spring from dealer, leveled out front with the 5100s @ 1.75"s, then had the whole rear leaf pack replaced on recall which were then recalibrated to stock ride height. So now the truck is leveled in both directions! But it sits at a great height so I am fine with it. I'm actually 3/4" higher in the rear but I can click up one more stop on the front 5100s, which will make it dead level. Trucks got about 96k on it, probably 80k of that on the front bilsteins.

I'm hoping the upsize isn't too negative on power etc. Regearing sounds like a big job. Would that be a big consideration if I go up a full 2 inches on the tires? Any advice on speedo recalibration?

Christmas is gonna be some wet okole seat covers as well as tires. Very excited about that! Have a great holiday everyone.

Going with 285's may or may not need a CMC, every Tacoma is different. You will need about a 2.5-3" lift. Go with front CO's, a full leaf pack lift and most importantly, lose the rear blocks along with front mud flaps. Regearing is really optional if you have a 6 cyl.

If you go 285/75/16 yes, there will be power loss. But it won’t be to bad if no other load is on the truck ie towing or a shit load of weight in the bed. Speaking from first hand experience I would stick with a moderately aggressive tread like Toyo At2, dynapro rf11, cooper atp. Trust me, even tires like the at3w will suck even more power because they are made to grip whatever terrain you’re on.

Thanks for the feedback. Another option I was looking at is the Radar renegade A/T5s. I had toyo open country ATs as my last set, they only lasted about 40k miles for me. Given the current price on that tire is pretty outrageous, and from what I read the quality has declined with Toyos, Ive been looking at other options. Feel free to correct me on any of this.

Its mostly my daily driver so I do want it to ride decently, but I am excited to upsize the tires for sure.

Per the lift, I can click up my 5100s to the 2.5" and that gets me enough height without needing to replacing my UCAs. I had the 2" blocks already and it leveled out nicely. In the future I would probably go AAL, but the rear lift will stay as is for now. I know it's not as awesome as a new full leaf pack but my budget goes for tires only, for the moment.

Hey man I'm open to hear anything or be corrected if I'm wrong! I figured I would get a few "completely redo your lift first" posts. And that's fine, but I won't be doing that now. I have yet to purchase anything, just in research mode here. My buddy has the falkens in 265/75 and man do they look nice. Also not horribly overpriced. But hey throw in your 2c, or if I should search something specific just tell me! This will be my first project for upsizing tires so I'm all ears.

You're going to lose power with 285's. How much power loss is acceptable varies by the individual. It's your money, spend it how you want and if you like the results that is all that matters.

For me the LT265/75/16's that I put on my truck at 1" taller than stock were big enough to meet my needs with minimal costs. I needed no modifications to the truck, fuel mileage didn't change, and while there is some loss of power it isn't enough to negatively effect my ability to tow what I want to tow. My speedometer was off slightly to begin with. Going to the bigger tire actually got it accurate with my GPS.

Stepping up to 285's are going to require some modification to the truck. The taller, wider tire will have a greater effect on power unless you also spend money to re-gear and I'd expect some loss of fuel mileage. Maybe not much though.

If you go to a 2" taller tire you only see 1" more ground clearance. The 265's for me were the best compromise. I only gained 1/2" of ground clearance, but there were almost no negatives. Going to 285's will require a lot more expense, and more negatives to get another 1/2" of ground clearance over 265's.

I wouldn't do it. But that doesn't mean it isn't the right thing for you.

3" lift, no cmc, LT285/75r16 wildpeak at3w blocks in the rear. 5100/eibach lift springs + 5160 rear with eyelets. Rides great.

Regear isn't difficult actually. Nitro gear has their set made specifically to reuse the old shims. It's quite literally a drop in. Pinion gear and ring gear are replaced, backlash measured and you're set.

I for one am highly considering regearing. The power loss isn't bad but noticeable. I attempted to mitigate this by utilizing light wheels in conjunction with the LT tires. Right now my rotational mass is 78lb per corner. With P rated rates you got lose another 10 or so lbs but it is quite difficult to find 285/75 in anything other than LT.

285/75/17 and you’ll need a CMC, smash down the pinch weld and cover with body sealer, and some minor other plastic trimming.

You might want to let your buddy know that those wheels he gave you are not Pro takeoffs- those come with the off-road model. Either he's got an OR or the dealer is pulling some shady shit on him.

not sure regarding the 3rd gen Tacoma wheel specs but with stock 2nd gen Tacoma wheels 285s rub on the UCA at full lock.

I thought he had the OR TRD pro, but maybe it's just the OR. Or, shady dealer. Of which there is one dealership in town - they offered to change my transmission fluid once. Only $650! So generous of them...

Edit - Fixed my OP, just TRD offroad. Still love the wheels, Toyota are still cheapasses when it comes to tires, like most manufaturers, and our local dealer still sucks.

Nah. My big debate is in between 265/75/r16, or moving way up to 285/75/r16. If I do the latter I'm thinking about eventually going for a regear, 4.88 or hog wild up to 5.29. Kind of seems like the regear is a super smart thing to do even if I stay stock size tires. That said I'm leaning pretty hard towards the 285s.

(Edit to add - I did a double take, thought you said 285/55 there for a second. Looked up that sizing - interesting. That tire is taller but narrower which might solve some issues, but at first glance on tire pricing the only ones I see on Amazon are all in the 250$ per range - outside my budget. But thank you for the suggestion!)

Still looking at the Falken at3s, since my buddy has them (hes a TW member too, around here somewhere) but I also had the radar renegade AT5s suggested to me. Slightly cheaper in price. I would rather find someone here that has them on their Tacoma.

My suspension is not full travel or anything crazy so I think they should fit with minimal trimming. I'm perfectly happy doing the cmc if needed. Just trying to see how much work I'm in for. The Tacoma mod rabbit hole goes deep, but it is also fun so there's that.

    Too few to list.
285's look nice but I did have some issues with them. No matter how many times I recalibrate the yaw sensor, it kept going off even on a u-turn. I had to do a vsc/abs disable switch. I was lifted with oem 885 coils and they did not rub during on road driving. They would rub slightly on the cab mounts backing up at full lock. Off road was a different story. Mpg was between 14-16 mixed though can get 19-20 on the highway but that's flat land and feathering the gas. Power loss? yep, it was a tad lazy on acceleration and I definitely felt the weight. Tires were 55 lbs and my wheels were around 30 lbs so they were pretty hefty.

To not rub the UCA you’ll need a spacer, or a different wheel. Once you get wide enough to not rub the UCA you’ll be in business to start cutting away. I lost 2.5mpg or so with 285s. Speedo is off about 7% too

Said buddy here- those 3rd gen wheels look better on your truck than they ever did on mine. Lots of sound advice here, and I don't think you should listen to any of it- You know what you want man- just go for it- new UCA's, a CMC and some 285's, then trim her up and you're good to go. Regear later if you think it's sluggish. Where we live its perfect- I mean how many miles do you put on that truck every year anyway? Besides, if you do a nice welding job maybe I'll have you do mine when I'm ready for it?

I've resisted needing the new UCAs. Maybe the new plan will be just get the 285s and see what I need as I need it. But the regear just sounds like a good idea. How hard can it be really?...
