    Hey gang!
So, coming up on the end of this year/early next year, I'm going to be buying a supercharger for my truck. I mostly do towing, and a lot of highway driving. Obviously the Roots TRD/Magnuson has that insta-boost off idle, but seems like it'll drop off in higher RPMS, whereas the URD is more mid-high.

Anybody have experience with both? I'd really like to ride in trucks with both, if at all possible.
Didn't know how many guys here that have one or the other are located in DFW?
I'd gladly buy you some beer, or something for a little test drive.. lol

I know there are a million started threads on this, but there's never a good conclusion on them. The threads just end. I've read through years of them.

The URD better at highway driving? The TRD is obviously better off-idle, but is it really *that much* better off idle?

    Thanks guys

I cant speak for the URD but the TRD you can upgrade to the 2.85 pulley which give you a lot more grunt in the lower RPMs.

OP. If you feel the need for more power for towing.... a supercharger is not your answer as plain n simple, you are at that point using too small of a truck to tow what you are towing. Be safe and buy a full size truck.

If you want a super just to have the super.... TRD / Magnuson super, with a smaller pully + TRD ECU flash + upgraded fuel pump would be the way id go.

A supercharger will help with towing within factory limits but that shouldn't be mistaken for allowing you to tow over that...still have the limits regarding the trans, brakes, frame, etc to keep in mind.

Both are good options, the TRD/Magnuson one has the advantage of being smog legal if that's something you have to consider where you live.

Not my first time with forced induction, was really just looking for a comparison between URD and TRD. Mostly on highway driveability.

The truck is plenty capable of towing what I tow currently, just would like more power (as we all do.) I'm leaning towards Magneson, with a UCON as I've already got a laundry list of performance mods done to the truck already, so a UCON will make much more efficient use of what's already been done.

Buying a new truck isn't what I want to do. Thanks for the input though.

Also- I'm well aware of towing within my truck's ratings. I'm no amateur.

Thanks for the concern, but that's not something that you need to worry about.

well... also note you will likely need to upgrade your clutch... the stock clutch doesnt handle the extra power well.

The URD MKIII Move a ~6K lbs tube chassis, long travel Tacoma, quite well. Ask @nfs257 .

I'll definitely let you guys know. I'll probably end up making a build thread about it.
I'm leaning more, and more towards the URD now. I'd be going with the stage 2 tune, which will put me at higher torque numbers, and WAYYYY higher HP numbers than magnuson. My off-idle torque wont be as high, but going off of all the dyno sheets I'm seeing, My off-idle TQ to about 2200RPM will be about 30 foot pounds higher with the magnuson, but then it levels off, whereas the URD keeps building- at an impressive rate.

Subbed, im also debating between the URD & magnuson as ill be s/c'ing in the next few months. Im interested to see what the OP and others have to say regarding these two. Im kind of leaning towards the magnuson and a smaller 2.85 pulley for the instant power

?? Could you explain this a bit further? Why cant the stock clutch handle the extra HP/TRQ?

I've heard a lot about the URD blower and the comparison between it and the TRD blower. From what I remember, both of them evened out pretty much the same more often than not. One has a lag disadvantage down low and the other one has a power disadvantage up high.

Remember, these are trucks not meant for top speed, but low down off the line torque to get them moving. At around 330 wheel horse with around 370 wheel torque with a 2.5 pulley I gotta say I'm more than happy with my TRD blower.

@trekker has the Magnuson in his truck and is on the east side of DFW. @ThomasMore66 has a supercharger, pretty sure it's the TRD and is in DFW but not sure exactly where.

Pretty much exactly what he stated. It cannot handle the higher torque limit. Pressure plate clamping force, as well as clutch disk material, are the two main factors in torque capacity of a clutch.

This is terrible advice IMO. OP asked about the SC and you tell him to get a full sized truck? Not too many years ago a full sized truck weighed about the same and had a similar wheelbase as a Tacoma - with shittier brakes. If you're pulling a trailer within the limits of the rated tow capacity then the S/C is a great option to give it a little more oomph off the line and over passes. AMHIK.

Modding with smaller pulleys and upgraded fuel pumps is just silly if all you want is a little more power for towing.

Well I can tell you I have a MT and my truck is SC, and the transmission handles it fine. If you recall the Magnuson SC was built in compliant with TRD. It’s a safe SC. It definitely wakes up the engine and gives the truck some pop. But still in a safe way where you’re not going to blow your engine, or transmission.

In fact, the later 2nd gen had the SC installed. So in summary, the transmission does not need to be replaced if you strap on a SC.

Recently, I towed ~4500# from San Francisco to Denver. And I was able to stay in 6th the majority of time. Only having to drop down to 3rd-4th a handful of times. Ended up with an average of 15mpg.

About 13 years ago, before the truck was SC, I towed about ~3000# from Denver to SoCal, and got just over 10mpg average.

The addition of the SC was brilliant in regards to towing. The increase in low end Torque helps a lot. You don’t have to open the throttle as much to get the same amount of power as you would with a stock 1GR.
